Senior moment and just plain lazy, Lung question.

I've seen lung classified as muscle meat but I have also seen it as an organ. Your thoughts?

Also, I have been able to get ground veal pretty cheap, but not cheaper than some cuts of beef. Any nutrients in veal that they don't get in beef?

And another, just found out that Cane loves tongue(shock) but it is a little higher than most beef that I get. Good or bad nutrient source?

Lastly, trachea. I have bought it dried but never fresh. Any thoughts on this one?

Thank you in advance

Please don't go looking up anything, I'm just being lazy by fishing here first but if you know off hand I would appreciate your input!

Medically lungs are organs, for raw feeding though they are meat.

I'm not aware of any nutrient difference between veal and beef, but I've never looked either....

If they'll eat trachea then feed it, like feet its high in joint supplements from my understanding.

Thanks Ruth.

I was sure lung was meat but I saw on a couple of sites were they are listing it as organ. Pretty sure I have a book that also says organ but I'm voting with you!

If you asked your doctor they'd tell you lungs are an organ, but for the purposes of raw feeding they are basically a muscle and therefor are considered "meat" rather than "organ" if that makes sense.

From what I have learned, Ruth is correct- lung is classified as meat re: the raw feeding world.

I have heard dogs love tongue but it isn't something I've had the money or "guts" to buy...sorry, but...it's a tongue. One day I will get over myself, put on my big girl pants and just deal with it... just for my boy.

The only difference I notice between veal and beef is in the hearts: veal hearts are a lot more pale. And I think the meat is, too. Not that it means anything.

I imagine trachea would be really chewy. I think I ordered it once from Hare-Today and it was thick and rubbery, if I remember right.

AB- how do you feed the tongue? Slice it up or just throw it down and have him go at it?

Yes- I see them at the butcher shop. They are huge things! I don't have an issue with almost any other organ/bone/meat product. But tongue--- I just can't...

Oh, good- so it's not just me, LOL. Plus I hear some people talk about having to scrape the top layer off, or something like that. Ugh, no thanks!

I was told that if I was going to eat it to "peal the skin off" before cooking......but yah, its not just you, I don't get squicked out by much these days, but that tongue did it.....

I think it's only necessary to scrape off the top layer if you are cooking it for human consumption, not sure why. It probably just looks more appetizing without it. mmm tongue

Cane is such a delicate butterfly, I cut everything up for him, so I do it for the girls too. Except for the outer layer which as you would expect was like a fine grain sandpaper, the inner layers reminded me of heart meat. After the initial gross factor, it wasn't that bad at all by the time I did the second one it was like any other meat. It didn't have any odor which is a plus for me. LOL

It is not something that I can afford on a regular basis but I found a couple discounted to 2.49 lb so I gave it a shot. Of course Mr. Picky loved it, so I did some looking around and found it for 1.90 lb. I'll try to add it in here and there.

Actually we got a tongue taco today from the local taqueria. Debra said it tasted like roast. I wouldn't try it. The dogs loved it.

There is also no odor when cooked. Just a little bit chewy, I prefer over steak. Just cooked pieces of chopped up tongue...won't hurt you...

"Cane is such a delicate butterfly..." :D

Still jealous over your Texas meat prices...

Near the bottom in education, health care and almost anything else you can think of. At the top for bigotry. I'd gladly pay higher prices for meat if it meant a better quality of life for everyone. LOL
