It is as I have been telling everyone. The black Boerboel is a fairytale, this is why I call them Unicorns. I know people that have been around the Boerboel since they were rescued as a breed. 1983/84, they tell me that every black dog that was presented to them did not fit the profile of a boerboel in either appearance or temperament, and of the 72 original founding dogs that were chosen not one of them were black or had black ancestors.
Black Boerboels of today originated from 3 dogs, Pet Shop Jim (note the pet shop name), Muller Lady, and Muller Poppy. The pedigree of all 3 of these dogs is in question and totally broken and full of lies. My new pup Ryder is the closest thing you will ever see when it comes to a Black Boerboel. Even Mizpah Black was not as dark as this pup.
Now Mizpah Wokkel Bokkies was pretty close though.
Lucas Van de Merwe the #3 founding member of the SABT (the one that started it all) loved his "Black" Boerboels. He called them black but they were Ultra Brindles like my Odi, Ryder and Lucky. There are as fare as I know no true black boerboels.
Now for the twist. All of our mastiff dogs can be traced back to the Cynomones and Hyrcanian dogs. These dogs were said to be giants and well suited for hunting Lions and Tigers and they were said to be "dogs of a Dark Color". There are 2 ways to perceive this, 1 they were black dogs or 2, they were dark or ultra brindle. If they were black then any mastiff today could throw a random black puppy. But the DNA today says the Boerboel does not carry the dominant black gene.
One last thing.
Proof that breeders crossed breeds to get black dogs.
