My Bullmastiff is almost a year old and he inhales his food, he is a fast eater. This technique works for us: I have been adding fish oil capsules to his kibble, he really enjoys them (that's the first thing he eats). I decided to "change it up" and substitute in a few sardines. I noticed that he did not really like the sardines, but he still ate them - last. I refrigerated the left over sardines. For his next meal time I put two cold sardines on top, wow this really slowed him down. He tries to move the sardines to the edge of the bowl so it won't touch the rest of his food, it's like watching a picky kid eat. At first I thought, he'll get over it and he'll be mowing it down in a few days, but no it has slowed him down and it works. My dog normally eats ANYTHING - toilet paper, leaves, sticks, he even licks the baseboards on a regular basis. But he has met his match with cold sardines, the key is that they have to be cold. It's worth a try, sardines packed in water go on sale for $.95 a tin
