Temperature change Scratching

Syndrom

Member
Hello everyone,

I live in New Jersey. Over the past few weeks the outside temperature has dropped and I believe the cold dry air is causing my EM Titan to scratch himself.
I put a humidifier in the room downstairs where he is during the day and that seems to help tremendously.
Titan sleeps upstairs next to my bed at night and I haven't been lugging the humidifier up there. He scratches more upstairs and this is why I think it's the temperature causing him to scratch.
Is there a topical skin conditioner or something i can give to help him?
Thanx in advance.

I read somewhere today, that taking some Coconut Oil on your hands (not gobs, just a small amount at a time), rubbing them together then working it into the dogs coat helps dry skin. You might add a small amount to food also. I have a Shar Pei mix, age 13, who get really constipated if she doesn't get her Coconut Oil daily.

What kind of shampoo are you using on him? I use Suave. People shampoo on my dogs. It leaves their skin moisturized and their coat is softer. It seems less harsh on them than regular dog shampoo. That stuff stripped to much of the natural oils from their coats.

Using human shampoo on pups can cause some serious issues with the pup's skin due to the different PH balances in human shampoo vs dog shampoo. However, many people use human shampoo with no problems. Be aware of the issues using human shampoo vs dog shampoo.

Are there bumps where the Titan is itching? if there are bumps, what do they look like? Is it just one area he scratches?

As always, the food can also be issue. The Blue Wilderness fish formulas have chicken meal, it could be the allergen.

If the scratching becomes habitual, it is definitely an allergy. Until you find the culprit, try giving him some benadryl.
