Ideal is all of the above. Cardiovascular workout is best when it is a prolonged but relatively mild exercise like jogging. Intense workouts like sprinting are better for muscle development but don't do much for cardiovascular health. Any one is better than nothing but ideally you should combine brisk prolonged walks with more intense short exercising like you were saying.

I do walk both of mine daily so they get the Cardio. I exercise them both in the morning (scheduled play) before work and they go to work with me everyday when we get home is when they are walked, then later in the evening I exercise them both again. The morning play is usually fetch and catch and they do serious running during this time. Ruger rips the dirt up underneath him when he runs after the ball (that too would depend if your dog is like mine or was a loping running that wasn't getting the desired effect) but in the end it works for mine. They are in perfect shape. Magnum (Great Dane) is a much more higher strung dog so I've adjusted his exercise to meet his needs workout wise as well as managing his "hyper ness" so yes each dog is different but you can find ways to meet all of their needs within the time you have to work with. I do change up the "games" quite often to keep the exercise balanced physically.
