Tripe question

I know we just started raw, but as I was talking to a butcher yesterday, I figured I needed prices on as much stuff as I can. He asked me if I wanted green or honeycomb tripe. Does it matter? Is it a nessecity when feeding raw? I would assume in a well balanced diet she should have some, but is one better then the other?

You want green tripe, and if he can get it for you then very cool. Its hard to find cause most places that sell for human consumption won't carry it. Honeycomb tripe is white tripe, which is the green tripe thats been processed and bleached and cleaned, taking all the extra good stuff out of it.

You don't HAVE to feed green tripe in a raw diet, but its beneficial to do so (kinda like a natural probiotic in alot of ways), and most dogs LOVE it.

Cool, thanks. I told him I was not sure on green or honeycomb, so he was going to check on both for me. He was very helpfull and willing to help and do some legwork for me. He is supposed to call me tomorrow with some prices.

If you can get green tripe for under 2.00 a pound from your butcher jump all over it.

Below is a website that delivers once a month to the Dallas area. I've used him a couple of times but his prices keep going up and his supply is limited. However, it should give you a good idea of what prices should be.

www.texastripe.com

You have to create an account to see prices but they dont ask for any sensitive info.

Personally, I think green tripe is great for upset tummy. Mine will get tripe about twice a week.

Thanks for the website. Are the prices good on the other stuff (chicken, turkey, pork etc)? That way I have something to compare when the butcher calls me back.

The prices are average. This week a local grocery store has turkey necks for .98 but regular price is 1.69 to 2.19.

A lot depends on how much time you can devote to finding cheaper prices. Our local HEB has whole pork loins for 1.47 a pound, a great deal whole boneless, trimmed pork.

I watch ads, go to ethnic stores and then fill in what I can't find from places like Texas Tripe and Hare today.

Thanks. I bought a lot of chicken at premium dollar, just to get started. I know it will take some time to know how to shop and what to feed and all that. I just decided on Friday night, it is now or never. When I get an idea in my head I just go for it and figure it as I go.

I'm a member in a local coop (Seattle, WA area) - they do bulk purchases. I ordered a bunch of ground green tripe with organ meat mixed in. I don't normally do ground mixes... but for green tripe that's all I've been able to find - and the organ mix had some variety that I can't always find, too. Going through the coop saved me about 10% over ordering it myself online (http://www.greentripe.com/).

I used to order from Texas Tripe but the last order I got from him made Titan sick. He does have great prices. Be aware that when you pick up the order, he give you raw chicken and it's not bagged or boxed. Bring a huge cooler(s) with you to pick up the order and be prepared to smell raw chicken on your way home. Bring disposable gloves to pick up the chicken to place it in the cooler. Can be quite messy.
