Two Year Old English Mastiff with Hip Dysplasia

Our soon to be two year old male EM was recently diagnosed with hip dysplasia. We noticed that he was holding his right rear foot while eating, favoring it when walking and occasionally limping after playing and running. We took him to the vet for a check up and was told that it probably wasn't his hips but his knees. We were sent home with steroids, pain meds and told to go to the pharmacy and pick up Glucosamine Chondroitin for adults and start giving him each twice a day. When the pain meds and steroids were gone, we continued with the GC once a day with his dinner. A few months went by and we started noticing the same behavior. He had x-rays on 9/25 and we were given the news of HD. The right hip is worse than the left. The vet stated that he had seen much worse and suggested that he send the x-rays to Ohio State University Vet Hospital for review and we agreed. We have not heard anything yet, so I wanted to get some other opinions and advice on what other EM owners have done and their results.
Surgery is approx. $4-$5,000.00/hip from what I have read.
Any thoughts or insight is greatly appreciated.

That sucks. I remember the uncertainty while waiting for the specialist to weigh in. Kryten has elbow dysplasia. Hopefully the specialist gets back to you soon so that you can make a plan to deal with it.

The suggestion to bring in OSU vet hospital for a consult was great. I hope you get some good recommendations for treatment!

OSU has a great vet department, dealt with them back in 97. Different issue but they did a great job and where very professional.
