Update on CL pup aka Moe

First a huge Thank You! for all the nice comments on my first thread about my little pup. :thankUsmiley:
The little guy now has a name, my daughter liked Levi, I liked Yoda, so we settled for Moe! He is doing great after his blood transfusion yesterday, gums nice and pink, crossing my fingers that it was all due to parasites, but will not know until blood work is done again on Tue, belly still huge He is now acting like a little pup, alert ,wants to play, tries to chew on shoes, chews on the kennel when he thinks he been in there to long, healthy appetite. Does his business outside as soon as I put him down in the grass. Luke is doing his best to be a good big brother, Moe woke me up at midnight and needed to go out, then at 5am Luke woke me up to tell me Moe was crying and needed out. Luke is never up that early normally.
Since Moe is soo little they can not be out in the same room, Luke gets a little overexcited and starts pushing Moe around smelling him. I think they will be good brothers.

And due to Moe being so little, [gained a whooping 4oz since I got him] I contacted the girl I got him from today, asked again if she was sure her male was the father of all the pups or if she had another intact male that could have got to her. She said she is 100% sure, her other dogs are spayed females. She also said the whole litter was small, and thought it was because the female is only one year old she had maybe delivered early, so the pups are premature. Do I believe that, from someone who tried to sell a very sick pup for $300, I don't know...
Is it even possible for a EM to only weigh 4,6 lbs at 7 weeks? Does anyone know? If it is, what would have caused that low of body weight litter? Could malnutrition/parasites during the pregnancy do it, if so, could it affect the pups temperament/behavior? If anyone have any insight on this I would love to hear it.

I have seen malnourished shelter moms give birth to some sickly, tiny pups that eventually "bulked up" and live normal, healthy lives. For what it's worth though, they are very rarely purebred so it's difficult for me to comment on a standard comparison :\ Good luck with your baby!

Yes they can be that small. Most likely has been sick since birth or shortly after. Could be premature but the shape you got him in would go with the first.

ooooh he is sooo tiny--poor lil guy!!!

He could be that tiny for 7wks since he was so malnurished/infested.

Although I've not seen it with mastiffs specifically, I've seen it happen with large breeds like shepherds & rotties that were unspayed & had litters too young.

If all the pups are that small, & mom is so young (too young) & also isn't in the best of health & parasite infested too-- it makes sense.

IMHO, I don't think they were premies--only because I highly doubt they'd have survived at all with those parasite loads if they were premies.

***You are truly his Guardian Angel! ***

Is Tailgate the other dog in the pic?--He should be given a big fat steak!
How do they determine if blood is compatible--do they blood type the same as with humans or is it different with dogs?

And yes, I too have seen them bulk up & grow to completely normal size without issues--*IF* they are removed from the horrible conditions & properly cared for.

Thank you for the replies. Our vets do not have much experience with the giant breeds as we don't have many ex large clients. I become a information junkie when I do not have answers and knowledge about something. Any information on how much and what to feed him considering he is a giant in a mini package, [once his levels are back to normal]?
Right now he is eating large breed puppy kibble, [still on a sample bag of Science Diet, he loves it but I'm not a fan of it!], liver, and some canned food, getting extra vitamins am and pm. He must have a pretty good tummy, with all the different foods he has had he still have solid stool!

The solid stool with food changes is a very good sign. He will most likely not have a lot of food allergy issues.
It is a coin flip if the health issues will or will not stunt his growth. You can just straight to adult food, puppy is not needed.
Someone will hopefully someone will post the food advisor link. I would find what's good on the scale and he likes, and go with that.
For final size wise, you may get a 100lb or a 200lb dog. He will though start growing like a weed shortly.

Its true with any pup, but especially with one like this: feed him to his body condition. Once he's free of parasites etc you'll be able to tell by his body condition when he needs more food, or when you need to cut back. He's not going to match ANYTHING on the label. So: When he's showing to many ribs up his food, when you can't find his ribs easily enough reduce his food. You'll be able to see changes in his body condition fairly quickly, so long term issues with not enough, or two much, won't be an issue as long as you're paying attention.

So we did blood work on Moe this am , And it is not were we would like it :( . We are redoing it on Wed, I knew there was a great chance something else was going on with him. He is eating, drinking, gained another 2oz. Still crossing my fingers he'll turn around, one day at the time!
Went on Craigslist last night and I be dammed, she has an ad out for the 2 remaining pups! Some people should just be.....
