We decided to spruce things up and fix some things under the hood. If you notice any issues, feel free to contact us as we're sure there are a few things here or there that we might have missed in our upgrade.

Water issue

Fred is now 16 weeks, about 35 - 40 lbs on the lean side. My issue is, that if he has anything more than a 1/4 cup of water at feeding time and a few ice cubes in between he gets the runs.
I have never seen anything like this before. Right now i feed him Orijen Large Puppy Breed Kibble, dont know if that has any relevance to my issue

Any suggetions????

Add some pumpkin (not pie filling) to help with the diarrhea.

Sounds like it might be the food. How long on the Orijen? BTW, pups do not need puppy food but feed them large breed food.

If you decide to switch his food, do a slow transition to help with digestive upset.

Check Dog Food Reviews and Ratings | Dog Food Advisor for another food choice. I researched Earthborn Holistic and it rated very well with great reviews and most of all, no recalls!

Generally, mastiffs are allergic to chicken and grain. Try to feed him a chicken and grain free kibble.

He's been on Orijen since I got him at 8 weeks. I spoke to my vet, he thinks that the chicken is the cause that is making him so thirsty. So we are gonna start there

Great decision! Remember to not feed organ meats for at least 2 weeks after starting the raw diet and regurgitation is normal. Well the world of poop watchers! *winking*

You can start with chicken backs or thighs but IMO drumstick also works because it's has both meat and bone. Any of those work. Watch him the first time he eats one of them to see how he handles the bones. Make sure the bones are not too small in the backs.

The pup will chomp chomp swallow the bone, this is normal. I freaked out the first time I saw Titan do it.

Ok, because the vet seemed to think it was the chicken source in the Orijen that was causing him to be so thirsty that he would drink too much and get the runs. I just don't want to upset his stomach. So starting with any other protein is not recommended?

I believe he was so thirsty is due to the chicken and the grains, grains being the main culprit.

Do a search on youtube.com for Dr. Becker's video on raw diet. Lots of great info.

Once you start raw diet, the pup will drink less water and poop like a cat. hehehehehehe

A 16 wk old pup, that drinks a 1/4 cup of water, and a few ice cubes between meals, IS NOT OVER DRINKING. It is dangerously under drinking!

Diarrhea is not caused by drinking too much water, it is caused by immune response to a trigger, either a pathogen or a allergy or stressor perhaps. I"ll come back to this point.

Never restrict a dogs water, unless it is in kidney failure, and has low potassium levels, and then and only then, restrict water. Or if its about to undergo surgery. See, extreme scenario's only. HOpe you get my drift here.

Here is my opinion as a medical professional of your scenario, and the link between water, and runnier shit.
Your dog has diarrhea. You do not know cause. IF you reduce fluid intake into the diet, the waste continues to have moisture taken from it, from tummy to ass hole. The less water, the less runny.
So it seems to make sense, give less water perhaps.
But all you are doing is masking diarrhea with dehydration effects. and it is dangerous what you are doing.

Please consider adding free access to fresh water 24/7, 365 days a year. If the result is emergence of diarrhea symptoms, address the cause, not add a risk factor to diarrhea in a pup by removing life saving water.

Same food, same result for 16 Wks. And you have done the right thing in changing diet.
Dont forget free access to water regardless of diet, ever again please.

Raw is great. Expensive, but great. So, likely food stuffs to upset a dogs tummy allergy wise are:
in order of trigger likeliness:
Grains
Beef
Chicken

What does that leave to feed a dog? Remember, you are after protein. So think: pork, lamb, offal, goat, fish, camel, kangaroo.

An allergy becomes an allergy, when either 2 things have occurred:
1. a allergic reaction test has been completed, and confirmed via a vet.
2. a elimination diet has proven what the trigger is.

Outside of these 2 scenarios, you have a guess. No more, no less.
Here are some other causes of extreme thirst for instance, diabetes, toxin ingested, heat. But like i say, a 1/4 cup of water daily, is dehydration, not polydypsia < over drinking.

And, do your pup a favour, go find a vet that knows what they are doing, your's clearly is rather suspect. And had not even suggested you should NOT restrict water in a pup with runs, is negligence in extreme!

I appreciate your remarks, and think was how I originally wrote the statement that made it seem I thought a quarter cup was giving him the runs. I was trying to say that he was constantly drinking water ie if I put down a gallon he would drink the whole thing in one sitting giving him the runs. If his water intake was limited he didn't get the runs. It was only for 2 days as an quote unquote experiment. The large breed puppy Orijen I was feed was a chicken based kibble / grain free. As of today, less than 24 hrs of stopping the kibble he is drinking water normally with a bowl down 24/7 and goingnto it as he wants it.

He seems to really enjoy the raw food so far, I am monitoring his poops and watching for any type of detox

I have raised German Rott's all my life and never had any issue with allergies or types of triggers that would cause any of this. This is my first DDB, and I can tell you it's been quite an interesting journey so far.

well a gallon of water is rather a lot! lol
im glad he's coming good.

Prior rottie and gsd owner here. Never had allergies in any of those. Only had mine 6 wks, and read a lot, and allergies do seem to be over represented in these dogs. Bad breeding? bad breed? sure is a pain in the butt to manage.
I am now a person that baths dogs for godsakes!
