Keep him attached to you at all times, and don't give him an opportunity to do anything you don't like.

When you're home, attach a leash to your belt ("umbilical" training method) and that way you'll know when he's getting ready to wee, and you can shout out sharply, and rush outside, praise for going outside. Walk him by your staffie nonchalantly, and the second he gets ready to mount, sharply correct. He just needs to understand the rules. It takes time, and will change your lifestyle completely for a month or so, but it is WELL WORTH it when you have a well-behaved dog that can be trusted at all times.

I have had intact males that never were fixed and never wee'd in the house or mounted other dogs after using this training method.

As for the bits coming off, it is the preference of many large/giant breed owners to wait until 18 months or so before going under the knife. This is to permit their bodies to become physically mature and benefit from the natural hormones that aid in proper growth and a healthy frame.

I have yet to meet a vet who shared this opinion, and always have to explain and argue my position with vets who, these days it seem, want them spayed and neutered in utero (lol).

Great advice LizB!!!! I was wondering does the 18 months go for females too? When does a female come into her first heat? I planned to my girl spayed before she would bleed.

Many people prefer to wait until after their first heat before spaying females, and that's what I'd do - put it off as long as possible, assuming the risk of an accidental litter is very (VERY) low.

*Cringes* we have an intake boy in our home. He's a hound mix and over 8 months, Dallas is 4. If we get him neutered then there would be almost no chance of an accidental litter. When is the first heat? Will she actually have a period?

Most of the time the first heat is 8-12 months.

I'd be extremely worried about an accidental litter with your situation. I have heard many stories of taking great pains to keep them separated, but for dogs, where there's a will, there's a way, and for the males, there is definitely a will, and they can get very creative in their efforts to get to the female - even a dog that had never been pushy or sneaky before.

I think you just saved me lol. We will get Duke (the boy) neutured asap. Like in then next few weeks and wait awhile on Dallas getting spayed.
