What day is your bitch ready to stand?

Breeders I would like to know please, if you can remember, which day of the heat cycle was your bitch ready to stand? Mooshi has FINALLY come in to season and of course she couldn't have picked a worse time! When I wiped her last night there was colouring, not heavy, but definitely there so I figure she is probably day 2 or 3 bearing in mind you don't always see discharge or blood on the first couple of days. Its my understanding the normal or average day a bitch will stand for a dog is around about day 11. I asked my breeder about Mooshi's dam and she didn't stand until about day 16! I am taking Mooshi to a show in Belgium next weekend which just happens to be about the time she should be receptive and of course the stud will be here in the UK! Argh!!

Mine cycle pretty quick 8 to 10 days is when they stand, but we do progesterone around day 6 to see where we are at and guage it from there. If we are close to 5 at that point then off we go as it only takes at most a day or two from there to get to their optimal in my girls.

Mary....have you ever used a human ovulation test kit on one of your bitches?? Im just curious if it would work. I don't really want to blood test Mooshi if I can help it, especially if I am going to be showing her around the same time. At the moment I am flag testing her by scratching at the base of her tail on her back and 'tickling' between her anus and vulva to watch for it rising.

I haven't. It is my understand the hormone surge in dogs is different so the pregnancy tests and ovulation tests don't work the same way, but I could be wrong. We just take ours to the vet and test at 6 days to see where we are at, if still low we will re-test at 8 days.

Hahaha! I hear you loud and clear but let's not forget that I am actually going with the studs owner and a friend of hers who is travelling all the way from Scotland. I can't exactly ask them to cancel the trip just in case Mooshi is ovulating! So even if I stayed home I wouldn't be able to mate them. Grrr! Fingers crossed she is on 8 days or over 11 like her mom. Knowing my luck tho we'll miss it and have to wait another year! Piss, shit, tit, bum, willy as they say in the UK.

Rawr flags and is ready from day 10-14, BJ doesn't express any interest really until she goes into standing then he gets stupid. But he was the same when we bred him to Lexi. He had no real interest, would lick and chatter a bit but no attempt to mount. We took her to the vet had her blood work down, thought from that we had missed her cycle... My repo vet said try natural one more day, I believe it was on day 13, she had ovulated the day before. She brought her female over and within seconds he was up and in. Tied the next day as well. We had thought we missed it, Black Jack knew better.
