Why do you love English Mastiffs?

I have always thought that all dogs are amazing. But.....now that I have experienced owning a EM I can say they are truly unique and amazing.
I never in a millon years expected a dog to look at me and give me the sense that they "get it". They get what I'm feeling, what I'm thinking and its almost like they try and help you. I find that Im not as anxious or in a hurry much now adays. Their nature is almost contagious.

Share what you love about your mastiff

Oh I can not forget their gentle eyes. My Grandma always says "they have old gentle souls, their eyes tell you that"
And she would know. She is 88 yrs old. She knows what she's talking about
I could go on forever.
I always say you will never understand till you've owned a mastiff

First, that is the cutest photo!

What do I love about English Mastiffs everything, but to narrow it down: their intelligence - not the same kind of smarts of a Border Collie - but they are no dummies! Their big hearts, I don't think I have felt more loved than by Oscar, and I am a wife of a wonderful man and mother of great three kids. My big guy hardly lets me out of his sight, he follows me everywhere, including the bathroom, he does know the command 'OUT' thankfully! They certainly are a challenging breed mostly because of their size and their stubbornness, it always makes me smile when I give Oscar a command and he sort of looks at me, thinks for a second or two and gives me that "alright, I'll do it".

Oh my goodness I love love the "let me think about it"
When they peek at you from behind a wall, out goes.the neck but don't ask me to move

That pic is a product of I sat the wrong way on the seat and slipped off. He stayed like that for the 10 min drive. Only a mastiff lol

Well there just a breed I can play with and he knows me. Biggest I guess is tug of war. He might be 5 months but damn he's strong. I can come home from work pissed as hell, Yes I know most dogs will meet you at the door tails wagging, but he's not jumping like a nut case or barking and bouncing off the walls. It's like he is just saying "hey glad to see your home".

There also amazing in how they naturally guard and along with knowing. Wife was attacked by a pit when she ran over to help him, she did not know the dog was there or see it, and suffered a major bite to the stomach, along with some other minor and bruising. For 2 weeks he would not let friends dogs greet her when she came in the door. (They are bad about jumping up on you as you come in the door, and hitting you in the stomach or in my case a lower area.) He would stay inbetween her and anyone else for about 2 weeks while she was hurting. After stiches out and she does not have to worry about the area, and it's less painful, he' back to normal and does not block everyone and everything coming toward her. For that two weeks he would actually growl and use his deep bark(which you rarely hear) if a dog ran toward her.
Now he is back to social butterfly and wanting to play with every dog he meets.

I myself was in the hospital for 2 weeks. Everyone told me about how Murphy looked sad while I wasnt home.
The day I came home he sniffed my stomach (stitches) and wouldn't leave my side. I spent most of the next few days in my bed and I really dont think he left me except to go to bathroom. He understood without words. Murphy was so intune with my..rest his soul
Lincoln is 6 mos old and he is turning out to be an understanding and amazing as Murphy. I am truly blessed to have had the honor to be part of Murphys life and now Lincoln
I feel my family are the lucky ones

Yes they are.
Just read what I wrote, not sure what happened but, she ran over to help a man having a seizure. She did not know he was at the time walking his two pitbulls and did not see them when she ran up.

I love how they are totally ok with just laying with you all day "velcro" dogs. always wanting to be with me, and they love children. Babies especially, insta tails when they get a whiff of a baby. I love that they are giant chickens, its so comical and yet when it comes to being a guard dog no problems at all. They rise to the occasion for their family. Creeper mode is funny too, anything that smells good even if they are in the other room those eyes are on you!! So many reason to love mastiffs!!

We did a lot of research on a breed that would be good for us. While both of us like boxers, shepherds, rotties, and most other bigger breeds, here are the reasons we ultimately choose the EM (this is both of our first dog ever):

- They rarely bark (we hate the little, yappy ones)
- Their excerise requirements fit with our lifestyle - neither of us are joggers or hikers and we live in a townhouse with no yard
- They aren't 'bolters' - my brother owns Yorkies/Cairns and as soon as you open the door they are GONE!! I love that I can open the door, walk out to the sidewalk, and know Caesar won't cross the threshold until he is told.
- They are cuddle-bugs - no aloof terrier breeds for this family!
- I keep hearing that they are supposed to be wise assessers of danger, but we got an oddball - he's scared of EVERYTHING
- I read that they got along good with dogs and people, and our oddball gets along with dogs great (LOVES the dog park) but people he's very stand-offish and some people he's never gotten used to (like our brothers) even though he's met them several times.
- I love their soft heads and velvety ears.
- I also love that my guy is a mama's boy and follows me everywhere. It sounds like a lot of folks here also have bathroom shadows...

All in exchange for dirty floors, a new couch that is covered in an old blanket, slingers on the walls, shedded hair in the corners, and sleeping in the fetal position so my dog has enough room to spread out... I'll take the English Mastiff anyday!!

I am on my 6th EM boy and will all ways own one! I love everything about them and they still continue to surprise me! If properly trained, they are kind, considerate, loving, energetic but lazy, big loveable lugs! EM's have very soul full personalities and huge hearts!

We had Linc to the beach today for Mother's Day and I found another reason why I love mastiffs.........Linc and I spend all day everyday together so its natural for him to wanna be with me.
My husband decided to take Linc for a walk. When they came back my husband said it was the worse walk EVER. He didnt care about the people or dogs, he just kept trying to get back to me. My husband said next time Im not invited to go....ahahahahahaha
They are the ultimate family dog
