Worried about my new baby!!

I'm new to this forum. I just got my new 3 month old Cane Corso. Her name is Nemesis (Neme for short). I took her to my vet yesterday & was told she has "Cherry Eye." My vet gave me a Hydrocortisone ointment to put on her eye 3 times a day. I'm worried that she'll need surgery to fix this. Has anyone had this issue with their baby?

Darn, did the breeder giver the pup to you with this condition? It's too bad they couldn't have resolved this issue before handing the pup over. My friends dog had cherry eye but it didnt seem to bother her much but I do know in some (probably most) cases it can be fairly uncomfortable. I hope all goes well for you!!

Thanks. No, I've had her for a couple of weeks, and she totally healthy and fine. She went to bed night before last, and it wasn't there. Yesterday she just had it on her eye when I got home from work, so we immediately went to my vet. Do you know if your friend's dog needed surgery to fix the problem?

Not this specific person. she didn't have anything done about it. I do know of a couple dogs around me in my past that had to get surgery for it. They were usually Shih tzu dogs though.

Raistlin's lower lids get red from time to time but my understanding is that it's common because of the droopiness of the eyes they can irritate easily. WHen his get like that a few drops of TheraTears and it goes away. I would strongly suggest making sure it's actually cherry eye and not just allergies or irritation before considering surgery.

If it's actually cherry eye, you get two surgical options: a "tack" tries to sort of tuck the prolapsed gland back in where it's supposed and stitch it there but those can and do fail, leading to re-tacking or to the second option which is removal of the gland altogether. If the gland is removed, you'll need to use eyedrops on her. I agree with what dmouse says ... make sure it's not an allergy first. We had a female BM who developed an everted lower eyelid that at first made us think she had cherry eye, but it was a false alarm (the lower eyelid eventually took care of itself).

Welcome to the forum from another CC addict.
Also sorry about the situation. Unfortunately Cherry eye is pretty common in the breed, actually in a lot of breeds :(
I know there are some vets who do both, remove part of the gland and tuck the other part. Supposedly is quite successful. I personally wouldn't pay for the tack, from what I have heard it isn't that effective and will come back. I would do the removal, I know there is a concern with dry eye if that is done, but I have yet to hear of anybody ever having that issue after the surgery. And I have heard of a lot of removals.
Good luck and post some pictures of your baby. May I ask where you got her? :)

Welcome to the board!!

Our Cecily had cherry eye in both eyes. She had 2 surgeries to tack them but neither worked so the 3rd time the vet removed them all together.

Here she is with her cherry eye (PS until her surgeries we did the ointment too)

And after: Her bottom lids are still droopy....
