With Zoe's spay being delayed, I decided today to take her to the lake for a swim. It's 30 minutes away so it's a feat for me to muster up the energy to take her out there. Once we get there, our usual little beach access was open and I was happy as I had my flip flops on and not my usual sneakers, or we could have trekked in the woods to other spots. Anyway, another couple was sitting at a picnic table having some lunch with their little dog in their lap, he/she gave Zoe some warning barks like don't bother me, but Zoe doesn't even worry about the little ones. Well I get Zoe suited up in her harness and 35 feet of leash since those are the rules to swim, they must still be leashed and off she went playing in the water.
Well up pulls an old suburban with 5 big, loud, going bonkers dogs. Zoe takes notice and the woman asks if she is friendly. I simply say "NO" as her dogs are extremely boisterous and Zoe has some reactive occasions. Well about 5 minutes later I guess she figured she would risk it and let her spaniel out without a leash and it runs straight to Zoe. Her hackles went up but she didn't react. I kept playing with her as the woman walked farther away for this dog to swim. She then puts that dog back in the car & I hoped that was it. Well sure enough she lets out a bounding chocolate lab and went straight to Zoe again, as this dog too was off leash! What do people not understand?!? I said she wasn't friendly...well Zoe proved me wrong as she played with the lab anyway as the dog kept zooming past the both of us. This dog snarled and snapped at Zoe twice and I simply called Zoe back to me. She did well with staying by my side but would take off playing as the dog would zoom past again. I can't blame her...but I was so frustrated with this woman for 1. NOT LISTENING 2. LETTING YOUR DOG OFF LEASH WHEN I SAY SHE ISN'T FRIENDLY 3. HAVING ABSOLUTELY NO CONTROL OVER HER DOGS.
Thank God Zoe was well behaved, but the nerve of some people. The couple there was shocked! I simply said, you know she usually is good but when other dogs snap she tends to return the favor. Luckily today she didn't as I would have been at fault having a "pit bull" as her "Lab" certainly wouldn't be to blame. Rant Over!
