Green tripe

We are heading to the butcher tomorrow to pick up our first bucket of throw away items from the mornings butchering!! Trachea, gullets, green tripe, spleen, pancreas and I think that is all I requested at this time. Is there more I am missing? And we will be cleaning and grinding everything tomorrow as it's supposed to be extremely nice(for us). Would you grind the tracheas and gullets right into the mix? How much green tripe can make up the meat portion? My dogs have never been affected by it so no worries about the runs. I think I am being charged $10 total for everything that fits in the 30 gallon tote I dropped off. It may be 40 gallons, not sure. They have also offered more if I want to drive 45 min to another butcher shop. Needless to say, I am super excited! Well, except for the cleaning of the tripe any tips would be awesome. Thanks:)

Yes, I would blend the Trach, gullet and green tripe. That is one of the blends that I buy and I'm paying about 3 dollars a pound. I would think that $10 is a steal and I would be high tailing it to the other butcher. Great find!

How much tripe can be added to my normal mix of 80/10/5/5? Could I do 40/40/10/5/5? Maybe 40/30/20/5/5? Meat/tripe/bone/liver/other organ. If tripe is more rich than maybe the increased bone would be good? Just bouncing ideas off everyone. I see some people say mostly tripe or a 50/50 mix is good but not sure what to believe.

I have heard of breeders that feed all tripe. I don't suggest that. However, like most things I would think they can have as much as they can tolerate. I like the 40/40/10/5/5

I like that one to start also. Thank you:) I'll report back in a few days how it works. Crazy holiday rush but we've planned a raw feeding/grinding/learning how to clean green tripe day tomorrow. Wish us luck! Lol

Some disappointment when I picked up our bucket:( only spleens, pancreas and trachea from 2 cows. BUT....the inspector talked with me and said he has another slaughter house that does large quantity and throws away everything! This current place is a small local butcher that keeps much and does not have a good set up for keeping tripe. So next Wednesday I will make a 45 min drive to collect green tripe, liver, heart, tracheas, gullets, spleens, pancreas.....this will cover everything we need with only purchasing some meat to add in. I feel like Christmas came early for us! So very thankful:) and let this be encouragement for others to not be afraid to ask lots of questions and be a bit forward in asking for the throwaway cuts. Take the time to know your local butcher with frequent trips to talk with and purchase. It took since July but perseverance has definitely paid off. Maybe be worth your time too:)

So happy for you. I have yet to build a good relationship with any butcher here in the NYC area...some only speak Spanish and don't give anything away for free, others well, they just aren't interested in giving anything away. Everything has a price, and it's retail.. :(

Maybe I should try the outer boroughs...but since I have no car, it's problematic.

I wonder if they do any slaughtering in NYC? I think the place I am going to is a "middle-man" type operation. Large numbers move through and no offal is saved which makes me think the carcasses are being sold to butchers for cutting. Not 100% sure but sounded like it. Maybe it's worth a rental car for a day to drive to a few butchers that actually slaughter too? You will have to get pretty far outside of the city I'd imagine;) lol

We have dropped our container and are hoping for a full one in return. Spoke at length with the inspector this morning and turns out he has an EM also! Maybe I'll get a bit more for my rescue? He is a lover of the breed you know;) lol I'll post back when we pick it up, around 3pm.

So another question about tripe. I believe the only part of the stomach used is the 4th chamber(abomasum). We will have to take all 4 though as they will not separate them. Am I correct or can we use the other three?

No tripe:( we talked some more and are attempting for tripe again tomorrow morning at the location close to me. We will have to sort through the entire digestive system as they are NOT allowed to open it up at the kill site. That should be interesting, to say the least;) lol Cannot complain though, lots of goodies for the pups and a small amount of useful meats/organs for their meals.

Holy crap that looks disgusting!! I love tripe tho lol. Hector doesn't care for tripe treat sticks. It's super smelly, but he doesn't like it.

Oh my lord, the last two days have been crazy with all the cutting, sorting, cleaning, grinding, packing and such. But we have 5 weeks of good raw meals for about 220# of dogs. And for less than $25! It was time intensive and quite physical too, but well worth it:)

Madness... did you remember to cook dinner for the humans this time?

Holy wow, what a great deal! Good for you. Seeing all that tripe makes me miss feeding raw. Someday. When the last kid is out of college and we're down a few dogs I'll do it again. Hahaha, you forgot to cook for the humans last time. I love it.

So has the house aired out yet? Gotta love that tripe "aroma". Great score! Might also check with your local mobile butchers (those that go to the farm or rancher.) They are my favorite and free source for heart, tripe and other goodies. I do have to drive sometimes to get it. One of my favorites lives just a couple miles and he will bring home for me in a trash bag.
