Hog Doggin'

I was very proud of my boy this past weekend. I use my Corso as a catch dog for hogs, and hunting season is among us. He caught his first pig of the season a few days ago and it was an epic fight! I've seen lots of dogs(mostly pit bulls) used for this sport and have never seen a dog that could break a hog down in such short order by himself! Unfortunately he did end up sustaining his worst injuries yet out of 2 and a half years of hunting but nothing that a weeks worth of antibiotics can't almost completely healed. I take pride in using this breed for what they were designed for and just wanted to share it. I'm sure I will get some interesting thoughts here.

I have a friend that hunts with his dog... it's a pretty amazing connection they have and incredible to watch. Congrats! Hope your buddy feels better soon!

I love watching that show where they hunt these hogs. I'm all for hunting, especially those! The one I saw had a beautiful harlequin Dane as their main lead dog, but pitties and a couple other breeds were there too.
I bet it is such a rush being out there and doing that. Good for you! Have fun and be safe!

Ahhh! I did capture a few images...I tried to upload them to the post, and was unsuccessful....I don't know why....they were taken with a camera phone! It's always a challenge to capture these moments while rushing to bail the dog out of a potentially dangerous situation. I always try though. I will try again. Maybe I can edit them to make them fit.

Ok. Here they are. Not for the faint of heart. The pig was about 100 lbs. He looks small with Lu next to him but Lu just measured at 29" at the withers and is a tall, lanky Corso. Sorry for the quality, but the Canon Rebel T2i doesn't get to go on these hunts.IMG-20111015-00087.jpgIMG-20111015-00093.jpg

Here he is the next day at the park....He's not always bloodthirsty. My 7 month old daughter was actually cropped out of this pic. She was sitting at his feet. That's the beauty of the Corso.306406_137405926360203_100002723884744_137833_1412748210_n.jpg

That is indeed the beauty of them, one to the other in the blink of an eye :)
Thanks for sharing the pics! He is looking great.
Next time bring a camera crew for us pigless folks who have to live vicariously through you :D

I never thought of doing this with a mastiff. Does anyone know how an EM would do at hunting? My girlfriend's Uncle has a few ranches that have an abundance of hogs we are fortunate enough to hunt all the time. Was it difficult training your Corso? Also, congrats to both of you on the catch and enjoy all that great sausage you should get from it!

The corso was made for the farm, hunting, catching etc thats what they love to do, good on ya Caleb, Eh no I wouldn't try this with a EM they're not fast enough and will get hurt (probably tripping over themselves)

Mastiffs were actually intended to do these kinds of things. As far as the English Mastiff, as awesome as they are, most of them do not have the stamina to chase and outrun a pig spotted 50-100yds away and to begin a chase with that much of a head start for the pig, to end up in a battle at the end of the chase...with an animal known to be able to bury most dogs. However, the right strain of Corso can devour a hog that 3 pitbulls can barely keep in place for the hunter. I grew up using pits and hounds and can now hunt more successfully with one dog, vs 6. With my Corso I have the nose, the speed, the drive, the stamina, the heart, and the bite. I can actually call him off of a hog as well. Try calling 3 pitbulls out of a fight! It can be a pain when you have to pry 3 dogs off of a dead hog. I'm sure there are exceptions with every breed, and using the English Mastiff in crossbreeding to ad size to other breeds with more speed and stamina is definitely not unheard of. Minus the chase, I'm sure that an EM would be up for it. Great Danes were actually bred in the early days for the same thing....but the Danes and Mastiffs of today still arent the Danes and Mastiffs of only 20yrs ago thanks to conformation competition and mass breeding. The EM of the 60's and 70's would be a great working dog!

As far as training, I didn't start until he was 2. I don't like to invoke aggressiveness in the beginning. At 2, he caught his first 5 pigs on his own outside of our house when we lived on the ranch that we hunt. It grew from there. Not much training.

Congrats and you won't get static from this end either. Those hogs can do some serious damage and having a dog that can take them down makes it safer for everyone. Congrats and enjoy!

I know my catahoula leopard dog was bred to do this too I believe. But I personally don't hunt and live in WI now so that's a no go. So I will be one of those living vicariously through you!
