(just lost another long post) I live here. Lived thru the events of that killing and had to endure 10 years of people being scared of my poor Boxers after the Presa event. It was horrific. And Yes the people were idiots.
I am not sure why I am not getting any info on mastiffs that will help me decide.
I am.Not. Going. To.Lock. Them. In. A. Basement.
When did I say that?
Are most mastiffs too dominant for me? I dunno. Many of the posts on this Forum do not lead me to believe this.
But I want to do my research and make an informed decision.
The dog will not be living inside the house but will have access to parts of it, plenty of human interaction and 2 fenced and beautiful scenic acres in the Sierras to roam in.
My schnauzer killed 8 chickens, all our baby squirrels we were hand raising, and as many varmints as she can get a hold of. BUT she no longer kills "our " animals. I trained her not to. She will lie out next to the chickens and not harm a one. Our cats too.
I did this.
The schnauzer does not live at home fulltime-- she goes to town with me half time-- we have a second home in San Francisco, and actually she really enjoys the stimulation of the city its Home to her (it mainly scares our other dog the Berner)-- I am looking for a dog to keep Berner Boy company in the Country, help out on the Homestead, etc...
(Sigh, I work emergency services with People, and really, it just drives me to wanting my animal buddies all the more..).... Sigh.....

I dont' personally know her, or know anyone who has a pup from her, but I like her site, I like how she presents her dogs, and their abilities, I like that she does OFA on her dogs.

All i'm saying is one attack shouldn't change your mind on the breed. You should be equally scared of English mastiffs because the dog's were mutts. I hear Giant Shnauzer's have a dominant personality but the Rottweiler and mastiffs are beyond. The only weird thing, is how you aren't scared of Cane Corso's, you do know that they have more bites on people than Presa's right? Goes to tell you that it's always the owner in most cases. But if you do have a lot of chickens and you get a dog that has a lot of prey drive uhm... That's why i would suggest an LGD extremely powerful, but at the same time docile to people in the household including the animals you own.

Mastiffs are really people oriented though so they are gonna want to be with you all the time... Have you heard of the Patti Labelle story on Cesar millans show? She get's a Boerboel, no longer can handle him, is scare because he's big, and locks him in a cage for 3 1/2 years, until Cesar get's him out from the cage.

I think you know what your doing, probably have more experience than me... I would check into Rottweilers though, tough but at the same time can be docile.

Can we stop talking about mastiffs biting people please? There's enough bad press out there without us talking about it here and we don't need misinformed people googling and landing here to see this.

Primehns, I am pretty sure she has made it abundantly clear she does not want a rottweiler. Drop the bone now, there you go good boy. :lolbangtable:

I think I found a solution Guys.. that website link I got from Ruthcatrin has Pyrenean Mastiffs! Wow the best of both worlds-- a LGD Mastiff! Wow I guess I can get traits of both... I did not think about this before-- will research this further and Post later (hopefully re: my new pup)....

Well mastiffs are harder than Schnauzers... Just a suggestion, have you thought of a Corso? I would say a Presa but from what i hear they are much harder to handle than many mastiffs, have more drive and can be prone to strange dog aggression. I think a Bullmastiff would be okay, depending on the heat, if it's too much than probably not because of their short muzzles.

Primehns were you not yourself asking about every Mastiff breed in tandem over the last month? Do you really feel you are qualified to tell someone what they can or cannot handle?

Giant schnauzers are used as police dogs, military dogs in ww1 and ww2. They have incredibly drive and are not easy dogs.

Keep the advice to people that actually have first hand knowledge of the breeds being discussed.

Well I really like this Forum, seems to have a good amount of info/ folks with experience... But we got a dog and its not a Mastiff (can I still be a Member)?! We went and did an impulsive thing (loooong story) I am sorta embarrassed but feel I did help someone out (lady was slammed by DH's 2nd kidney transplant, his then broken leg, death of her mom, then her dogs got pregnant while she was away)--- we now have an 8 week old scrawny, bottle fed runt- he is 3/4 Great Pyrenees and 1/4 Anatolian (although I have to say the sire sure looks like the neighbors Akbash cross bitch) so I guess we will be learning all about LGDs asap-- so far the Schnauzer has really taken to the pup while the Berner, being Beta is somewhat jealous and growls at him....
My long term plan (it took us 9 years to get the giant schnauzer) is one of those Pyrenean Mastiffs from that Breeder in Nevada though.... Maybe we will have more credibility after little "Oscar" grows up and settles in....

We have plenty of members who don't have mastiffs or even dogs at all so you're welcome to stay as long as you'd like :)

Definetly spend some time reading over the link to the LGD library I posted, the LGDs don't handle like most other dogs (though I've never been around a schnauzer, but from what I know....)

Ok thanks guys... I will continue perusing the LGD info, I think I will like the aloofness/ independence and appreciate the contrast with my other dogs-- so far the little guy is fairly unflappable he does not startle easy but takes it in stride (although he has enough sense to get outa the big dogs' way when they are romping and is appropriately submissive....

Congrats on your puppy! I was going to chime in here and say that if you think your Schnauzer is Velcro then a CC may not be a good fit lol. I can't even shut the bathroom door with both of mine in there with me lol. Good luck and we are waiting on pictures now :)

Yeah i was, doesn't bar me from sharing my opinion.
Opinions should be based on ACTUAL experience not Wikipedia. There are enough folks on this forum who have real experience with these breeds to give their 2 cents.
