Cesar Millan: Opinion

Two people who came from basically nothing and are very successful. They are also great role models. Are they perfect in everything they do, nope..

Disagree with their opinions (I disagree with both on many topics).. but we only do our self a diss-justice by not learning from the areas they are gifted in.

I have the same background so maybe that's why I tend to look for the good in them, we all have flaws. I'm no millionaire but there's a reason certain people are that, they're good at what they do and have the ability to learn from others, both their flaws and gifts.

I agree with your statement but CM is no role model, doesn't have the gift of dog, isn't a heaven sent dog god. He knows very little, his producer & writers tell him what to say. I'm sorry but out of all the TV dog trainers he's the worse and always will be!

Just like you I'm no Millionaire and the jobs I do will never make me it but I am happy with what I do, who I am and the success I have done in my life :)

That's a bit unfair don't you think? You fall short in some area of your life as do I.. so that keeps us/you from being a good role model?

That's basically what your saying, isn't it? He's not the best at training dogs so therefor he's a poor role model (maybe your just saying in the training arena)? His son's are doing quite well at a young age and he is an inspiration for thousands of Hispanic children & family's.

He came to America and made a name for him self doing what he claims to love, we may say he could do what he does a lot better, and in different ways but to say he's no role model isn't exactly fair?

His personal life I never attacked. I no nothing of his children. If they are doing great I'm happy for his family.

As a trainer as a person who claims that dogs just naturally love him, who claims where he came from they where something he just knew bc of watching dogs on the street. his practices on the method of training. no he is no role model.

I can name a handful of trainers who would be much better to watch & learn from. And I'm not saying me as I am not in that list. Am I a good trainer my clients, judging, clubs etc. all say I am. The trainers I have trained, I know from all over say I am good.

Am I a role model for kids who are different yes I am. If you knew my learning disabilities, my insecurities when I was a kid and the fact I am different bc I chose to be an outcast with so many tattoos .. I am that role model for kids who are like me. I pushed my way to being a trainer before all these schools came out .. All the online bull****. I have became a judge for UKC, became a decoy and working on my cert for US SchH, on top of that studying to become a decoy for PSA. These types of things are things for kids to look up too.

I never said anyone on here are not role models bc some might be some might not don't know anyone's story.
You yourself might be a good role model I wouldn't know.

All can be a role model for many if they truly want to be.

In some ways I'm sure cm is a awesome role model. Just like many singers who cant carry a note in a bucket. Or any nascar driver that can hardly make a race cause he's to slow. Thats no bearing on the person or what they have accomplished. But if you dream of winning in nascar, or making it as a singer, or becoming a top notch trainer, there are better folks to follow. But if you are a young kid on the streets feeling life is no longer than your block, nothing wrong with looking up to CM for what he's accomplished.

I think he uses extreme methods on his TV show at his own risk. In the majority of the cases it appears to be a last resort. I don't think he is helpful in people using his techniques at home without knowing what they're doing (like previously said, some of those techniques work for some dogs in some situations but if you can't tell the difference you can get yourself into trouble).

Having said that, there are some cesar philosophies that I believe in and I find his books much more helpful than the TV because they don't focus on techniques as they do attitude.

Things I agree with:
- you need to treat your dog like a dog not a child
- exercise, discipline, then affection
- you need to be your dog's leader
- misbehaving dogs are largely a result of owners that arent raising them properly
- there's no such thing as a dog that can't be helped, just a human that can't help a dog
- the energy you portray is just as important as any technique you can use

There are lots of studies on dog behaviour. Most of which shows that his techniques do not work. He usually does the opposite. Talk to any animal behavioural programmes and ask them about Cesar Millan and they will happily give you a very long and lengthy explanation as to what's wrong with his techniques. He's set dog training back with the general population decades. I had a bloke at the dog park stare my mastiff (looking him directly in the eyes as a stranger) down because he thought Gummy was being aggressive because of what he learnt from the 'dog whisperer'. Thankfully, Gummy ran away and came to me.

Last person that tried to stare my dogs in the eyes got a growl and bark. I say again I would love to train Cesar for an hour, and treat him the same as he does a dog. Let's see if he wants to fight or bite after I kick his gut or choke him until his eyes roll.

I just spent 3 hours reading this thread, watching the videos posted, and then watching more CM videos online. I really enjoyed reading everyone's thoughts and opinions; I am learning so much from this forum. I have had dogs all my life....somehow I even once inherited something called a chihuahua! Mostly tho I have always had large dogs. I expect certain things from my dogs, and from my experience it takes a lot of time, effort, and constant work on my part to achieve these things. I also feel that I owe my dog certain things, and the most important thing I can give that animal is a sense of trust in ME. Without my dog having trust in me I can accomplish nothing with regards to what I want from my dog. I had never seen any video/shows of CM. What I saw sickened me. However others choose to label it, I know abuse when I see it. Just my opinion....

Stone yes, Thor h#ll no.

Actually I did learn some stuff although most of what he was spouting was common sense, IMO. I know next to nothing about the guy I've only watched a handful of his shows. Most of what he catters to is the average dumb public.
