We've been conditioned for our entire lives that raw meat = BAD THINGS, but people eat all sorts of meat raw, or barely singed, in cultures around the world.
And although I can think of several kibble/canned food recalls (just in the last few years, never mind just this spring) where not only did dogs and cats get sick and die, but so did the humans who came in contact with them.
I can't think of a single instance where raw food diets for cats and dogs (either home prepared or commercially prepared) resulted in a sick/death toll to come even close.
Consider: the rules on human foods are WAY tighter than on dog foods. They start recalling things VERY quickly when they believe there's an issue. Not so for dog/cat foods, the Diamond recall went back MONTHS, and they're not sure it went back far enough. The whole issue with chicken jerky treats from China? Thats been going on for a COUPLE YEARS with no recalls.
