First time Neo owner

Hi Everyone,
I am new to this forum and a new Mum to my beautiful Neo Baby ! I was fascinated by this breed for a very long time and last October my dream came true when I got Bonnie who was 13 weeks old. Her breeder was going to keep her but his work changed and he didn't think it was fair as he was not going to be at home so much. She is just amazing. I have fallen head over heels in love with her and I think the feeling is mutual. She is so loyal and loving. The main problem I have had with her is she is nervous. Have socialised her as much as I can - I have my own business so she comes to work with me every day. But very nervous of people she doesn't know or new situations. I take her to training classes every week and she is pretty good. Bonnie has an obsession with chicken ! She loves it. At training when we are all trying our recall you hear all the other owners shouting "Come" to their dog.... and then there is this woman with a Neo Baby shouting "Chicken" !!!! Don't care - it works every time !
Bonnie is now nearly 7 months old and is 42Kg - is this a normal weight for a Neo her age ? She looks lean so I am not concerned she is overweight. Was more concerned that I read that they were half their adult bodyweight at 6 months - could she really be 80Kg when fully grown ?
I am now resigned to the fact I will always wear clothes that are covered in Neo Nectar - the words drool and slobber are banned in my house !! I am also intrigued my the wonderful relationship I am having with this beautiful animal and look forward to the years (hopefully) that I will have her.
We recently got an 8 week old Italian Spinone puppy who Bonnie is so protective over. She is like a new Mum who rushes to him every time he cries. And boy does she tolerate some serious biting of her rather loose face !
Any hints or tips would be hugely appreciated as I am a novice with this breed. Always had more traditional gun-dogs ( labrador, pointer and spaniels) so this new baby is something very different for me.

Congrats! I would just keep up the training a socializing... the nervousness is hopefully a phase, they go through different "fear periods", but she'll likely be more aloof with people as she gets older. As far as the weight, every dog grows at a different pace, I doubt she'll end up 80kg but I guess if her parents were huge it would be possible. Do you know how big her parents were?

Photos? :)

Congrats on your Neo. I highly doubt she will reach 80kg. The average weight for mature females is 50 to 59kg...roughly
110 to 130 pounds. Continue with training and socialization. Remember...they do not like strangers...they are totally
devoted to their family and don't do well with change (as far as family goes) some adapt better than others... they are
very protective. Although they love their family as a whole, they will also have a favorite person.

Can't wait to see your pictures :)
We refer to the drool marks on our pants as "bling" in our house. After all it is kinda shiny when it dries ;)

Hi Everyone,
Thankyou for all the replies. I am just trying to work out how to get pics on here and will upload some. Bonnie just been in BIG trouble - she will jump up in the kitchen and try to steal any food she can ! You would think she never got fed ! There
was some very tempting roast meat left over from Sunday dinner that was just out of reach. Have changed her over to feeding raw meat and she loves it. Before that was very picky with her food but now clears the bowl. Do you all have Neo's ? If you do I would love to hear about them

LOL...Neo Drool is "Bling". I'm rich in diamonds! My boy is going on 13. I got him at 6 months of age. I
remember once I was preparing to make homemade spaghetti for dinner. I cooked a roasting pan full of
Italian sausage and asked hubby to cut it up for the sauce. I removed the pan from the oven and placed on top if the stove to cool off. I let hubby know I was leaving to run an errand and to keep an eye on
the Neo and a reminder about cutting the sausage. When I returned home, I caught the Neo in the act. He devoured all but 2 of the Italian sausage links.
He said they'd been cooling off long enough.

MSRG2106 Congratulations on your Neo! They are awesome dogs! Not for everyone but I think that's what makes Neos so unique. They're one of my favorites. I lost my Neo rescue last December and we miss him a bunch. Just a heads up. Neos communicate with their body language and will let you know when they're uncomfortable. I like Cesar Milan on some techniques but the worse thing you can do with your Neo is say "No" when they give their famous Neo sideways glare before they act out. Notice those behaviors and give a quick pull and say it's okay. If you say "no" you'll have a Neo that will not give any warning and just lunge and bite when they feel you or your family is threatened. Just a pointer. I have a friend that rescues Neo in Los Angeles and she shared this with me and it was best Neo advise ever. Better than the books, lol. LadyDogLover your description was spot on' especially how they love their Italian sausage and spaghetti, lol!

I just spent the day with my friends Neo, she is 14 months old (the neo, not my friend lol). Just a great dog, has some listening issues but I blame those mostly on my friend and not her dog, I don't really agree with her training methods. But I played on and off with that dog all afternoon and she was extremely powerful but all at the same time very careful to not hurt me at all. Its the same when she plays with their American Bulldog. The AB is 3 and they are big dogs to play inside and they play hard but never hurt each other. Its kind of a real site to be seen but I also am shocked she hasn't lost her coffee table from 250lbs of dogs crashing through it lol.

Hi There,
Looking for some advice and reassurance. Bonnie is now 8 months old and has just come into season about 4 days ago. In the past two days she has been really aggressive towards our 16 week old Spinone puppy. Today she really went for him and it has really shocked me. From the day I got her she has been so soft and gentle. Is this something that can happen during their season ? I am worried that she is going to stay like this after it has finished. I am going to have her spayed in a couple of months. Any advice would be hugely appreciated as I am feeling really worried about it

You really shouldn't have her spayed until at least 18 months, although closer to 24 months is preferable. Try and keep them separated as much as possible. Some dogs do get extra grumpy when they are in season.

Hi Smart_Family,
Thankyou for the reply. Why do you wait until they are 18 months - 2 years before spaying ? My Vet said to do it 3 months after her first season.

Giant breed dogs need to wait til their growth plates are closed or at least mostly. Spaying before that can cause incontinence, stunted growth, joint issues, etc. These things can't be usually reversed if they happen. There are a couple threads about it around if you use the search feature.

She's beautiful and I agree with the 2 years of age before fixing stunted growth isn't cool it holds a host of problems in itself
