Hello, my family is considering a mastiff for our next dog, and I've been poking around on the internet looking at breeders, etc. The site above, NewJerseyMastiffBreeders.com, has several available puppies, but the prices seem way out of line to other breeders I've seen. All puppies are over $2,000, generally 2400-3200 dollars. The typical price seems to be 1500.00 give or take 500 on other sites. I am willing to pay for a quality animal, but was wondering if anyone had any further information about this site, the quality of the animals, and if they are "worth" that much more.

We are not looking for a show-dog, but a family pet. Temperment and health are the two most important aspects of our choice.

Thanks,

-David

Well gut instinct screams run away as fast you can. Without looking too much into it, it screams puppy mill from the homepage.

Well I know a show quality EM with good lines is usually $2500-3000...maybe more I dunno. I have also seen EM's in the $800-1400 range for companion pets. I almost got an American mastiff for $1500/Pick of the litter $1600 before deciding not to. Either way they are expensive investments. I think health of the EM is worth more IMO.

I don't see anything on their page about the adults being tested for anything. You sort of want to put that out there for people to know. Not that their puppies are not once, not twice, but three times health checked. That's great and all, but what about the parents?
I'd steer clear.

Do a google search of their phone number...

I,m not sure the prices are that far out of line with what I'd expect to pay for a pup from a GOOD breeder. I paid $3000 for Apollo. Having said that, that whole site screams puppy mill at me. I don't see anything about health testing the parents (which means MUCH more than a vet saying 'yep, dog's healthy'), their gaurentee specifically does NOT cover displaysia and similer problems, 'Champion Bloodlines' doesn't mean squat......

Thanks everyone, especially AKBull for the suggestion to google the number. It's on a bunch of puppy sites, looks like they run webportals for all sorts of breeds, essentially a front for an internet puppy-mill. Should have done that first! I was hoping for something like "They are a well-known co-op of New Jersey area mastiff breeders who have banded together to minimize web-costs." Obviously not the case though.

Thanks again for the quick replies!

mastiff club of.america has a pretty good network of breeders. Im not saying they are all reputable breeders but a good.starting point..

Thanks cwayaustx, they look good too. I found a list on Mastiffs.org that has a list of breeders tagging them in three categories. a) which ones test parents for at least hips and elbows b) are current members of Mastiff Club of America and c)require cystinuria testing on all stud dogs and only breed negative dogs. I've been using that as a starting point.

There is a list of rep breeders that was just started on here. it is under the breeder section. Hopefully that helps.
