  • Welcome back!

We decided to spruce things up and fix some things under the hood. If you notice any issues, feel free to contact us as we're sure there are a few things here or there that we might have missed in our upgrade.

Skinny 2 year old English Mastiff

Hello!

I have an English Mastiff that just turned 2 on Dec. 1. He is 32" but only weighs about 135 lbs. He is a "free feed" so he has food out all of the time, but never seems to eat more than about 4-8 cups of food a day. Should Ibe worried about his weight? He is very skinny and bony.

Is he fixed? Has he been dewormed? Has he been to the vet? Can you see his ribs? Can you feel all his ribs or just the last two or so? What kind of food do you feed him?

No, he is not fixed. Yes he has been de wormed. The vets in our small town are not very familiar with the breed, but they say he is ok because he is growing slowly. I cannot feel his ribs, but can see and feel his spine. We are on a one income budget so we buy him purina one large breed formula.

Is there any way you can post pictures? Maybe some of him standing so we can see? In all honesty that food is not a very good food and that may have something to do with it. I know how hard it can be on one income as we are as well but the better the food, the less you will have to feed so that $50 dollar bag of food will last longer than a $20 bag of food. I'm not criticizing you by any means but that may be the issue. Also foods such as that one are full of grains which some mastiffs have a problem with. There's minimal protein from the chicken and most of the food are fillers. It's like feeding cereal all the time. Your pup may not be getting the nutrients he needs. Another thing is that a lot of mastiffs have a problem with chicken as the protein source. Again please do not feel like I am criticizing you, I understand that you are probably doing the best that you can do for your dog and for your family. How are his stools? Does he have any other problems like rashes, itching, hot spots etc? It can be very hard to find a vet who is knowledgeable about giant breeds so either it's time to try a new vet if you aren't comfortable or start doing your own research to bring to the vet. If a dog is a healthy weight you will be able to feel (not see) the last two or so ribs. From above he will look like he has a defined waist and doesn't look like a sausage. Also from the side you will be able to see a tuck under his stomach back towards the groin, his stomach won't go straight across from chest to groin. Mastiffs in general are slow growers. Many do not mature until at least 2 years but often closer to 3 years and sometimes even beyond that. Do you know how big his parents were?

He's gorgeous! Obviously he's on the thinner/smaller side but he doesn't look emaciated or anything. Free feeding could also be a part of the problem if he's used to food always being there he'll take his time eating it or put other things such as playing in front of eating because he knows that when he wants it the food is there. He also may just need a higher calorie food so that when he does eat he's getting more calories. The purina one large breed adult has 400 kilocalories per cup so you might want to aim for above that.

Thank you so much for your help. Can you reccomend any dog foods that may be good for him? Also, I have a 9 month old female that is still on puppy food. How long does he need to be on puppy food? It will be easier for me to afford a better brand of food when I only have one kind to buy.....lol!

Neither of them should be on puppy food. Mastiffs are a giant breed who need to be on a quality adult or all life stages food from the get go. They need appropriate levels of protein, calcium and phosphorus. Too little of these things and they won't grow enough and too much and they will grow too fast which will cause problems down the road. If you could tell me what you are able to spend a month on dog food I could try and find you your best option. If you don't feel comfortable posting here you can private message me as well.

I have no problem psting. I spend right now about $100 per month on food. My little female is a hefty eater! Is there something out there that I may be able to get for that? I had looked into science diet and blue buffalo before, but I am just so confused on what to do.......

Okay answer a couple questions for me if you will. First off how much does your female weigh? Secondly where do you live (again can private message me if you don't want to post on here or you can tell me you live near whatever town, whatever state)? A good rule to have in general is to avoid all foods that you can get at the grocery store or at a store like Walmart.

I have my dogs on Chicken Soup for the Dog Lover's Soul Adult. It is cheaper food, yet very good quality. Not the top of the line, but has all good ingredients in it yet. I get a 30 lb bag for $27. I'm in the same boat and cannot do the expensive brands. I used to do California Natural and then switched to this.

The cheap food like Purina One is full of fillers and he's not getting quality ingredients.

He's beautiful! We feed ours Innova Large Breed. It's on the expensive side at $50-$60/ 33 lb bag (Petsmart and Innova send us a least one coupon a month that ranges from $3-$5 off, plus whatever deal they have going on). Even though that's pricey for a 33 lb bag, we only use one bag per month. We have a very slow grower too, just over 100 lbs at 10 months, but we love the food he's on. I would def look into Chicken Soup for the Dog Lover's Soul, as suggested above. That was a food that was recommended to us as well. Best of luck to you!

Chicken Soup is good food but problem is that many mastiffs have a problem with chicken so it's something to be looking out for. I did mention Innova as an option to her for both her dogs. Also I have stopped recommending any food made by Diamond (which includes Chicken Soup, Taste of the Wild, etc) but that's based on lawsuits, past recalls and recent issues with another food that is manufactured in the same place as some of the Diamond foods. A lot of people still continue to feed it but I switched away from it. At the end of the day, dog food is a personal choice for every dog parent and there are lots of factors some of which are personal that people don't always wish to discuss. I'm glad a forum such as this exists to give people ideas, opinions and options because there are so many different kinds of foods and it can be overwhelming especially when feeding giant breed puppies/dogs.

Thank you all so much for all of your suggestions! I am so glad that I stumbled upon this site! I have so many questions and the vets around here dont always know the answers! It is great that I can come here now and ask the questions that i have!!!!

He's not too skinny. If he got signifigantly thinner I would worry. We have some pretty cheap decent quality dog food around here, it is called Premium Choice and its about $35 for 40lbs.

Another option for those on a budget for food is the Costco/kirkland signature Lamb and Rice.
It is a decent food made by Blue Diamond and sold under the Kirkland label.
The package is green and has images of veggies and meat on the bag (there are 2 different kirkland kinds) They also sell a salmon grain free in the states I believe. It is under 30$ a bag for a large bag and I know MANY reputable Corso breeders who use it for all stages.
Price wise it is good and the quality is MUCH better then Purina.

One of the OP's problems was that petsmart was the only place she could get dog food around her so that kind of limits things as well. I wish they would carry more premium foods.

I will say one positive thing about Purina One....it is better then the big green bag of regular Purina Dog Food....it at least has meat first in the ingredients...the regular food does not.

Petsmart does carry some alright stuff, like Blue Buffalo and Innova products. You can always ask them to order in stuff. The amount of food a mastiff eats a month is pretty large. :)
