Spraying Diarrhea

Hello everyone,

I was hoping to get some advice on diarrhea help. My 7 month EM came home from training about 2 weeks ago. They ran out off his food (Earthborne great plains) so they gave him Nutro Natural Choice Limited Ingredients Large Breed Puppy Lamb Meal & Rice formula since I told them he has a sensitive stomach. Ever since he has been home, he as had really runny stools and it got worse when I started feeding him his old food, Earthborne. So this week I have been giving him white rice with his kibble and it did initially help firm up his stools. I then started to decrease his rice and increase his earthborne but it just made his stools worse. Now for the past 2 days I have given him only white rice and his poop is now even worse. Spraying diarrea. What should I do? Do I just take him to the vet where I think they will give him pills to firm up his stool but I think that is just a temporary solution. It took a long time for him to get accostumed to Earthborne but he was on the really skinny side. Once he came back from training, (away for 3 weeks) he looked great, put on some weight but was eating the natural choice limited ingredients large breed puppy. How long should I keep feeding him rice? Should I go back to earhborne or try something new?
any advice is greatly appreciated!

i first started rice with boiled chicken but i stopped that after 2 days since I remember Mastiffs could be allergic to chicken, then I started to add a cup of Earthborne with the rice but his stool did not get better. I have removed the chicken and the earhborne and only rice for the past day and a half.

Go back to the rice and boiled chicken or rice and boiled hamburg for at least a week. Poor things digestive system is probably a huge mess from all the changing back and forth

You can also give him some real canned pumpkin (not the pie filling) or plain unsweetened yogurt. It works great when my guy gets "loose."

Lol man it seems like the more you try to get it right, the more it backfires! I know because I did the same thing. Even on the rice/chicken it can take a few days for it to start to take affect. I finally had to change the food too because one brand was just too rich for my EM's stomach. Good luck man.

I agree, keep him on the boiled chicken/hamburger with rice until his diarrhea stops. Most mastiffs will be allergic to chicken in kibble but not raw chicken that is boiled.

Make sure he is drinking his water and has the same level energy that he has had in the past.

How's he doing?? You can try adding slippery elm bark and probiotics to help get things re-started, too. The 'GI Support' pills from onlynaturalpets.com really helped us when we were having food transition issues.

ok, hes been on boiled chicken and rice plus 2 table spoons of pumpkin per meal. His poop looked great, yesterday the best I have ever seen it. He has only been pooping once a day though, in the AM. He pooped this morning and it started out good but then it started to run again and become "loose". I see in the pile left behind, he ate 2 of my son's little toys, these rubber lizards..lol. I take it that the toys he ate upset his stomach? Im hoping to see more of an improvement in the coming days. After 5 days, should I go back to Earthborne? I just bought a small bag of Nutro Limited Ingredients Natural Balance Lamb & Rice formula. I know its not as good of a quality as Earthborne but maybe I should try something easier on his belly? Anyone have any luck with that?

May I ask what brand of food your EM is eating now?

He pooped again this morning. It was a big pile of runny rice pudding. Am I feeding too much? When his poop was great the other day, I did not feed as much. He ate 3 times yesterday with a cup and a half of white rice and pieces of boiled chicken and 2 scoops of pumpkin. Maybe I need to just feed twice a day?

are you able to get ahold of pro kolin paste? i'll attach a link for you so you know what i am talking about. this stuff works a treat for my two when they get the squits. i would stay with rice and chicken, small and often (5-6 times per day) and also give the paste. if not better within a few days then go to the vet. after a couple of days you should really be able to start to get back to adding small amounts of usual kibble. http://www.petmeds.co.uk/p-405-protexin-pro-kolin-paste.aspx

It may also help to give him a boiled egg, its good for helping to bind the tummy.

Yea it's possible that he's eating too much. When my EM eats a little too much his poops will also be on the mushy side, even on the same food. Id say just for good measure make an appointment with a vet too....since the problem is still lingering around.

Fromm 4-star is what I feed for kibble.

Pooped this morning. looked great especially since I added kibble yesterday to his rice and chicken. I underfed him again yesterday just in case and he's only been popping once a day. I will increase a little more today and hope for great results. I am trying Canidae all life stages.
