What sort of Supplements are MUST-HAVES for Mastiffs

I want to help my foster dog recover from her neglect. She is age 2ish. She has a horrible scar from something, probably a burn. Any suggestions for improving skin, coat and/or scars?

What about Joint supplements?

What do you consider must haves for a mastiff and particularly a neglected, underweight and scarred mastiff???

Thanks for your help!

I really am not fond of using any supplements unless there's an actual issue. As far as the coat and skin you could use salmon oil and maybe coconut oil as well. Has she been to a vet? I wouldn't use any joint supplements without the supervision of a vet. Most quality foods provide all the supplementation needed in a mastiff's diet.

My vet recommended Phycox, a joint supplement. Sent some samples home, but I haven't really put them to use. I researched it and it seems to be more for older dogs who are experiencing arthritis pain.

As for skin and coat, I started adding salmon oil to their daily meals about two weeks ago. I noticed a HUGE difference - beautiful shine and soft, smooth texture.

We go to have her stitches from her spay removed this coming Friday and I will ask our vet then about supplements. i give my older (non-mastiff) dogs fish oil, but I haven't heard of salmon oil. Is is better than regular fish oil? Where do you get it?

Thanks!

I use Phycox for my rescue. Her hips seem weak and we messed up and put too much weight on her. She is starting to kick her back legs after she pees. So I think it is starting to work. I also used it on my big boy when he hurt his tendon.

I recently started giving my dog cod liver oil supplements, one tablet with his food in the morning and at night, it is amazing how much his skin has improved. He has really bad acne right now on his chin that I had been washing and doing everything I could think of to clear it up, the cod liver oil has made a huge improvement in clearing up his acne, he also had really bad dandruff which has cleared up as well since I started the supplements.

I was actually going to ask something like this, I'm in the process of swapping to raw, I'm feeding raw at night and kibble in the morning till all the kibble is gone, then I will be feeding completely raw. Are there any supplements that I need to give him once he is on a full raw diet? I've read so many different things about it :/ some say yes he will need calcium, daily vitamins and oils, some say no give nothing :/ ive probably got another weeks worth of kibble left so if there is anything I should get him to go with the raw diet before the kibble runs out?

I would try using Nustock on her scar, that stuff is like a miracle. Used it on my old dog's cyst which was about the size of a quarter around but very full of liquid I guess you could say, it was right where her collar went but the vet wanted it removed not because it was cancerous but because a collar would rupture it...used a harness instead and applied nustock every 3rd day and by the end of the month it was the size of a pea and within 2 months it was completely gone, had dried up and all the hair grew back very quickly where it had been shaved! With what was left of the bottle my neighbor had found a puppy while he was fishing and brought him home and it had mange, cleared that up beautifully too! I've heard it helps scar tissue.

We are also looking at giving our dog cod liver oil. A couple of questions - did you buy the "pet" version? Or just the regular gel capsules for humans?
How did you feed it to your dog/ ensure he ate it?

Appreciate the feedback :)

You can buy the pet ones but the human ones are cheaper. Most dogs I know love them whole but you can break them and squeeze them over their food.

we bought one bottle of "canine" caplets, and then kept the bottle for reference for dosages and bought the human versions, they're definetly cheaper.
