EMs Are Worthless Guardians??

VOIDECHO, you probly got a mixed breed mastiff. I know for sure you not talking about a full breed English mastiff.

EMs are not gonna be as confrontational as many Dog breeds. And Unfortunately the Breederes these days seem to breed purely for mass, which can create a lazy, wuss, that has very little drive and IS a lousy guard dog. This is a crying shame.

But if you keep your EM fit, work with diet and exercize to form real muscle definition, and find a breeder that is true to the breed, not just breeding for mass, you will have a fit, menacing guard dog that is amongst the best.

My EM in the past have protected when needed. I believe they are smart enough to know when to expend the energy and when to kick back. I had an EM in the past that was the most loving guy but once omand only once did he get aggressive . A man who we live near tried to get close to me and my dog went full on apshit lunging and barking at the guy. We found out later the guy was a convicted sexual preditor. I really think people under estimate their mastiffs.

I have had Dougal for almost a month now, what I have noticed about him is that he is a breathing, snoring rug that will wake for food and the bathroom and once he is awake he gives lots of love. BUT when someone comes into my yard while we are out he springs up and goes right into guard mode until I let him know the person is okay and not here to hurt me. This is IF he is awake, when he sleeps, he sleeps hard, I can stand right over him and he doesn't even twitch. When a new person comes in the house he is nice but gives a low growl to let them know he is giving them the chance to prove they are not going to hurt me.I am very confident that if I were in any kind of danger this would be the rug nightmares are made of...lol I love him just the way he is :) and I have my Boston Terrier for protection....lol. What that person said was put very rudely and it's in that kind of delivery where they lose the whole point of what they were trying to make....dumbass.

Gesh Loki wakes up and dashes to the windows then outside at the smallest noise. It's annoying but funny at times. He hasn't figured out the difference from what's outside & what's coming out of the tv speakers. He's the same way though, he won't let anyone in my yard or house with out me saying they're ok. After I've said they're ok, it's a "have some drool on you" moment and some sniffing and he goes back to sleep or lays down in one of his fav spots.

I'm a little late to this party, but some of the posts are a hoot.

Around our house, if I was under threat, the dogs would go, "you're a big guy, handle your own crap." If my wife was the one under threat, Katy bar the door. And if someone were to mess with one of the cats, it would take a SWAT team pry the hounds off the villains. For some reason, two of our dogs believe they are Secret Service Agents assignt protection detail for the house cats. Take the jewlry, but touch the cat, you lose a limb.

Percy was asleep in his kennel when the sister-in-law and brother-in-law came over. We were outside when they arrived, and came in with us. Once Percy heard the brother in law's voice, he did his big boy bark... So we let him out, let him sniff around, then was hyper, showing off, running around...... ugh.

Hank is an excellent watch/protection dog. He is almost 10 months, 155lbs. at 7 months my step dads dog attcked him while visiting their property, i got between them, got a lil bit but saved Hank. After that he wouldn't leave the kids side for anything. I tried to call him to the river so i could wash my hand and he would have none of it, he wanted to be right on top of his kids. At home we have a neighbour with a psycho unsocialized shep/rottie mix which killed one of our cats, attacked our other, and attacked Hank at 4 or 5 months. Now whenever the neighbour rolls by in his wheelchair Hank barks warningly and his hackles are right up. When other neighbours use the garbage bin in our front yard, he barks and checks them out but in a more friendly "Oh, Hi! What are you doing?" way. Knocks on the door and noises at any hour he has no hesitation putting us on alert. He does periodically get ganged up on at the dog park but i believe that is due to his being so young and intact. I think the other dogs know that in order to be dominant to him they have to do it now before he finds out how big and strong he really is. His best friends are a little Pug whom he loves to chase and a mastiff/St. Bernard cross that he loves playing stick tug of war with. There was some kind of creature in the back yard the other night that he was worried about, he kept barking and jumping backward but didn't want inside. He also love laying on my feet/lap whenever possible.
