Getting neutered

I got male mastiff Titan weighed today. He's 130 pounds at 11 months and I am having him neutered on Monday, is 130 to small for his age or is he a little under weight?

I keep seeing on here that it really messes with their body if you neuter them too early, and that it is best to wait until at least 1.5 years. Someone with more experience will be able to tell you way more.

As for his weight, I don't think that is too small, he still has a lot of filling out to do in the next couple years

I would wait till he is atleast 2 yrs old if not 3! I have seen and have heard others say it as well that when you neuter too young (before growth is complete) it somehow stunts them resulting in lil heads and fat bodies (which looks retarded). unless you have an unfixed female running around I would def. wait.

I had heard about waiting till 2 years and would really love to but my husband has a 6 month old Female PTSD dog and would rather have a stunted dog then unwanted puppies, I hope that does not sound horrible

I don't think it only stunts their growth, I think it also gives them joint problems etc

I'm assuming a male EM. 130 at 11mo is quite respectable. Castle is an intact BM male and 150 at 15mo. But Bruno has the gist of it. You will get a different dog, structurally if you neuter at 11 months as opposed to 1.5 to 2 years. He certainly is not done growing. A castrated dog tends not to get the bone mass and muscle that an unfixed dog would. They tend to be a little taller but not as massive, if that makes sense. Many people get it done much earlier than you are talking about so I am unsure how it will affect your dog as it is likely that some of the bones are done growing but not ALL of the bones.

It's recommended that you wait til ideally 24 months for males. Doing it earlier than that tends to lead to the lanky build with them being tall, all legs and not filling out correctly plus the growth plates aren't closed and the joints aren't at their full strength so there's the increased likelihood of bone and joint issues. Is there a possibilty of the service dog being fixed? Most service dogs I know are since having a dog in heat in certain places can cause issues.

I have seen quite a bit on this forum about the horrors if early neutering. I know an EM that was neutered at 7months and is now 215lbs. He was well over 200 @ the 2 year mark. I realize it is only one case but you can't say for certain that he is under developed.

Is this based on your professional opinion or on what others have quoted on the intra-web?

A while back I posted the link to a scientific summary of several reviewed scientific articles talking about the structural differences that result from castrating your dog. It wasn’t your run-of-the-mill web article. They specifically mentioned how the plates close. Search for it if you’d like.

I've also posted several veterinary articles as well about it :)

Nothing is a certainty, except death and taxes. What you try to do is beat the odds by stacking the deck in your favor.

Underdevelopment isn't the only issue. Male dogs need testosterone for their growth plates to close and to get their joints to their maximum strength. You don't want a 200 lb dog on joints that aren't working to their full capacity. Obviously every dog is different but I know at least a dozen giant breed dogs who have suffered due to early spaying/neutering.

I have read the links and articles and but much of what is written is very akin to "if you shave your facial hair it will grow back thicker." I have seen several posts on various mastiff forums attributing their dogs size, weight and muscle tone to early neutering. That is ridiculous! There is no way to prove your dog would have grown larger had they not been neutered at an early age.

Get a vasectomy if you're worried about pregnancies, and not so much the secondary sex habits such as marking, humping, etc.

I'm not as experienced as the other owners on here when it comes to mastiffs, but I do know in that situation I would get the female dog fixed, and in the meantime out some sort of doggy diaper on her in any instances where they must be together. That is my opinion though, I would just rather not take the chance risking it.
