  • Welcome back!

We decided to spruce things up and fix some things under the hood. If you notice any issues, feel free to contact us as we're sure there are a few things here or there that we might have missed in our upgrade.

Is that a ...?

After having the 10 person this month think Kryten is a lab or lab mix I have started to wonder what what breeds other people have gotten instead of the correct breed. He just turned 4 months old on Monday.
My list so far includes:
Labs or lab mix
Shar Pei
And closest Cane Corso (they refused to believe EM because apparently they don't come in a dark brindle)

OMG i can't stand this, it drives me insane. People really need to look up some dog breeds outside of labs and the few other popular things.

I get boxer more often than anything else. People always start with "Is that a boxer or a boxer mix of some sort?" If i'm feeling like a smartass i might say "No, she's only 7 months old and would probably eat a Boxer for a snack when she's full grown :)" I'm just joking of course, but im getting a little tired of that question haha

Others are
Pit Bull
Great Dane
Pony (hehe)

I don't get too many anymore but usually it is

Great Dane
Boxer
Boxer Mix
St. Bernard (huh?)
And Bullmastiff

For my English Bulldog, I get into a lot of heated debates with people since they often stress how my English Bulldog isn't a real bulldog since there is now the Olde English Bulldog and everyone knows those are the real bulldogs...ummm...okay, let's go over the breeds that went into Olde English Bulldog and how they aren't breeding true as of yet. I also get asked if she is either a pug or a French Bulldog. For some reason having her called a Frenchie bothers me more than anything else. Have no idea why because I like Frenchies as well.

It just really surprised me because even with Irish Setters being really rare here most people that is either their first or second guess with Jiggers. First then being golden retriever which is the other half of the cross.

With Knox, we still get Pitbull a lot, I think because he's brindle. Great Dane, Cane Corso, Boxer, and Dutch Shepherd (random!) have been offered up before.

With Roux, we got Shepherd mix a lot when she was teeny tiny. But now people just generally ask what she is before venturing a guess.

Why would anyone be upset if asked "is your dog this?" or "what is your dog?"
Not everyone studies dog breeds. Seems like a silly thing to be bothered by. Seems like a good time to proudly say what the dog breed is and be happy someone is even curious. I welcome questions. But thats just me.

I went through a phase with this. At first it wasn't that big of a deal, then after the fiftieth person asked if he was a shar pei did I get a little annoyed (mostly because it was someone walking with them and asking them what it was, "shar pei mix"), and now I just say no he's a BM.

It's the color that confuses people. I used to work with goldens & people were really confused by the reds, especially the dark reds. They were pretty sure they were Irish Setters, even at the breeder's.

With Sunny we get all sorts of guesses, because he's a dark brindle. A mother freaked out at the market when her kid approached us because "That's a Pit bull; it could hurt you." Sunny not only has his Therapy Dog title from AKC; he's also a certified therapy dog tester. He's used when evaluating other dogs for therapy work.
Someone asked if Deedee (RIP) was a pug; she weighed about 120 lbs. Here's her picture just a few months before she died:

Yup; looks like a pug to me.

Lab or Lab mix (more when she was younger)
Shar Pei (also when she was a puppy puppy)

Now I get a lot of:
Boxer mix
Pit or Pit mix
Cane Corso (about 4x)
American Bulldog (about 3x)
American Mastiff (also like 3x)
Boerboel (once)
Mastiff mix
Pug (once)
Oh, another new one last week, Newfoundland, lol I guess I shaved her?

I have a lot of people say they didn't know Mastiffs came in "that" color (black brindle)

"Is your dog a ____?" or "what is your dog" questions don't bother me AT ALL... what annoys me is when I just over hear someone tell someone else "Oh that's a Pit Bull" Or "Oh that's a Boxer/Lab" Like they know... um no. The other thing is when people don't believe what she is, say, no she's too small, no she's the wrong color, no she must have some Pit Bull in her, etc, etc... Because they know so much more about MY dog than I do! Half the time when I inform them that she has absolutely no Pit Bull in her (because they're so evil, ugh) they just give me this look that lets me know they think I'm a big fat liar and I'm just covering for her (my dogs) terrible heritage as a baby eating Pit Bull.

Not that I have ANYTHING against Pit Bulls!

A vet tech still refuses to believe she is anything but a GSD X Chow mix. The vet doesn't say anything but I think she thinks the same thing. It really aggravates me, ha.

I used to get is that a shar pei with Ben and that did bother me alot because in the UK Shar Pei's are being bred from a very narrow gene pool and are incredibly unhealthy and prone to any number of serious conditions, and I didn't want people to be associating me this practice.

I get lab or staffy or a cross of both :/ I'm not a fan of staffys and the fact that every second dog around here is one, you would think people would know that Alvar is not one lol but apparently not. The funniest thing I have gotten is "damn your staffy is growing rather big quiet fast! What's your secrete? I've been trying to get my staffy to beef up for ages!" I just smiled and said "I guess it's in his genetics" :p
