When our ddb was small like under 50 lbs. We'd get is that a sharpei or nice red nose pit even.
Once she got over 50 lbs. pretty much everyone knows that she's a mastiff.

Omg, I just got this at work and had to come post here. And from pug owners as they're HOLDING their black puppy!! It was hard to maintain my composure, but I managed. I just pointed at their dog and said, "No, you have a pug. This dog is much bigger and is a Bullmastiff." :slapme:
We usually don't get much flack from pug owners, they can see the difference. When we meet pug owners when we have the dogs we always point @ the pug & say "Look! A mini me!"

I used the term "pug owner" loosely. We work with a pet store (unfortunately), so we see a lot of truly clueless impulse buyers. They'll come in with the pup in a carrier, I'll ask what kind of dog they have in there and they need to check the paperwork!

First post here. So I'll start with a hello. I have a female bullmastiff. I got pit bull a few times (she's only 4 months right now so I guess I should expect it). I'm going to start responding with "I though I bought a beagle but I'm beginning to wonder." I'll save that response for when she is full grown. :)

Welcome Todd68. I was surprised today when I had three people ask if he was an EM. He also got to meet his first unrelated mastiff today too.

I am surprised by how many people get asked if their mastiffs are sharpeis. Has none of those people ever seen that breed? They look nothing like any sort of mastiff.

With the rottweiler I've been asked if she and her daughter were labs, I was also told she was very nice for a pit bull. Mostly People ask what she is just to confirm that yes she is a rottweiler. a lot of times when people ask if she is a rottweiler they proceed to tell me they have a pit bull. I don't quite understand why them having a pit bull has anything to do with me have a rottweiler. I guess it's that connection they feel with the fact we both own "bad" breeds.

I have no problems with pitbulls but right now they are a fad breed and it seems like everyone owns and breeds them and the shelters are mostly filled with pits and pit mixes. They can be great dogs but I do not like the way they are built and the shear numbers of them...

With Chumah so far we have heard people ask their partner/friend if he was a great dane, giant pit bull and most people just ask what he is so far. I say boerboel (not 100% sure on his breed though) and so far no one has ever heard of a Boerboel so it works out for me.

Yea, I don't get the shar-pei thing either. I guess your average Joe sees wrinkles and it MUST be a pug or shar-pei.

I also get a lot of "Oh, so he's a mix" when I say Bullmastiff. I didn't realize how unknown the breed was until I got one. I think I'll design some flash cards and carry them around.

Great thread!!! We get "is that a great Dane?", "is that a boxer?", "nice pitbull!", and even got a "ohhhh look at the German shepherd puppy!".

We ALWAYS get people asking what breed he is and when we say "Presa Canario", they ask what that is. I'm really so sick of explaining it, I almost just agree on what they "think" it is. Usually the next question following is "how much did u pay for him?". People!!!!!!

unless people say mean things or are jerks if someone ask or takes a guess I'm always willing to explain just so they know there are dogs beyond Rottweilers, pit bulls and labs also I frequently ask people what kind of dogs they have or take a stab at the breed I wouldn't want anyone to lie to me or not be warm about the question...

I LOVE IT!

Wow, I thought it couldn't get any worse than "Is that a Pug?" But coming from someone with a Pug????!

That would be like me walking my Doberman and meeting a Min Pin and asking if it was a Doberman lol, no, even that wouldn't be as bad, I guess a really dumb Dobe owner might think the Min Pin was a puppy...
