  • Welcome back!

We decided to spruce things up and fix some things under the hood. If you notice any issues, feel free to contact us as we're sure there are a few things here or there that we might have missed in our upgrade.

Well, tomorrow it is....

I have been trying to wait a full week before checking in on him. I didn't realize that he had actually made contact with your hubby, it all happened so fast. Kato does seem to play off fear, so if D is putting out any sort of unsure vibe I'm sure he can sense it. Jordan never hesitated with Kato. Kato did the same with him, as far as "forgetting" that he was part of the house. For the first week or two he would bark when Jordan entered after being gone all day. Jordan just told him to knock it off and walked on past. I was surprised that he handled himself so well. At his age I think I would have been intimidated by a dog that size barking at me! I had really hoped that he would settle in more quickly/easily. He always took correction well but did seem particularly protective of me and the family. That seemed to ease after he settled in. He does seem to take cues from the other dogs. Jax helped him overcome a lot of fears at my house. Maybe if he bonds well with Lily she can teach him a few things. Kato did well with a lot of Jordan's friends. He seemed to be more unsure of the hyperactive/unpredictable ones.
I don't recall him ever growling to get my attention. He would grumble or growl during play but not often. I really hope he can make this work! He needs to realize how lucky he is to have you and your family!! If you need anything, give me a call.

New update:

It's been a full week. He is starting to settle in some. He is 85% better with us coming in now. I think most of his issues is because our ACD jumps and barks and twists in circle due to excitement. Kato doesn't get excited, he starts barking and gets defensive. It also helps if you open the door and say "look Its....." and he watches them come in. When we come in and he goes on a barking fit we just ignore him and walk the other way. He comes and smells you and then calms down, you just have to remember to let him approach you when he is in that moment.

He gets along well with my two smaller dogs just fine. They are co-habitating peacefully now. Rocco is another story. I went ahead and let then do the fence sniff..that ended in what would have been a slight scuffle. They both calmed down and ignored each other quickly. I assume at the first off lead meeting there will be a few skirmishes ( I have the air horn ready, lol). I don't think it was with any intent more of a "who's on top" conversation. Lots of drool, no real harm. However, I really don't want a fight or to have to step into a fight, so we'll see. I am hoping to try again on Saturday after some heavy exercise.

He tried to play for the first time the day before yesterday. He lunged for a ball and then went into a play bow. But just sniffed the ball after that, and barked and ran around. That was the first sign I have seen of him being goofy. He is incredibly well mannered in the house. Very calm, like attention but not pushy. Has good house manners (no food stealing or trash digging). He is the ultimate moocher though :) Broccoli he wasn't fond of but broccoli with dip...right on! I haven't switched him over to raw yet. I want to make sure the transition to the house goes smoothly, and if it doesn't work out for any reason I don't want him to flip back and forth.

He is scared to death of the swiffer, lol. That was the first freak out I'd seen (that Amanda had warned me about). He upended our bench skittered into the stove and slid across the living room and turned to watch it with the evil eye. all I did was bring it out of the laundry room, hadn't even used it yet. My dad stopped by yesterday and he woofed from around the corner with his head sticking out periodically. this is more the behavior I was expecting, and am glad (not glad but you know what I mean) to see it.

He is doing better with Dom. I don't trust them together all the time but he is 95% better with him. He even goes to him for pats now. Whether he is more comfortable, or Dom is, maybe both, I am just glad he is improving. He seems to have taken to my husband and follows him mostly (hubby is home a large part of the day).

I did order him a basket weave muzzle. Hopefully it will be here soon. We will start socializing in other areas soon. Like non-busy parks and just places off our property as we are rural and He has only seen one person since he's been here. I am waiting to get more of a feel on him and his reactions.

I am so glad Amanda was able to work out getting him pulled. He is a very sweet boy under the confusion and timidness. Hopefully with time we can work on that.

More to come after this weekend. Oh and here is a pic from Sunday :)

That is great to hear Ang. Will keep my finger crossed that he continues in the right direction but I know you can sort him out if anyone can :)

I am so happy to hear that he is calming down. I knew the transition would be hard on him, he had really made himself at home here. I was getting worried after your last post! I had talked to Jason about it and that night he had a dream that we had Kato back! I am glad the small dogs have accepted him. Is Peanut still growling? Is Lily still doing the creep and sniff? lol Hopefully he and Rocko can work out their issues. Kato only reacted to one dog since I had him, and that dog full on attacked him. He snapped back but calmed down quickly as soon as he was away from that dog. He never tried to go back after the dog and was over it after he was out of range. If Rocko accepts him I'm sure they will get along great. He is a great dog and I'm so happy you are seeing that. Thanks so much for taking him on! Keep me posted on his progress. We miss him terribly!

Well almost 3 weeks now. We got his papers and registration in the mail, tags and all :) He has fallen in love with my husband and I think vice versa. (hubby and Rocco don't get along well). He follows him everywhere.

New things we have learned about each other: Bones make him foamy, he looks like he is rabid, lol. Kato also learned about the electric fence this week. He has come around from the trauma, don't worry. He has also learned not to bother the horses when they eat (they are a bit cranky). He pays no attention to the chickens at all anymore, but the rabbits he still tries to get occasionally. Him and the bull we currently have on loan have had a few stare downs. *silly boys*

He wags his tail and is much more social with everyone. He LOVES (putting it mildly) being outside. He runs around and does laps, lol. He has an EXCELLENT recall off lead. He knows sit, down, sort of stay (we are working on length). He is learning to shake and speak. He was a relatively quiet dog, but Lilly soon brought him to the ACD dark side. So now he prances around and barks like a 130 lb cattle dog. Peanut still growls, but he does that with the others, hes a grumpy old guy. Rocco and Kato are still thinking it over. I don't think it is very intense as you can verbally call them apart. I think no matter what at some point I am going to have to let them duke it out. they will need to have the conversation of who rules the space, but I have not let them do it yet.

Overall we are doing pretty good with each other.

Oh God, the ACD dark side. I am so sorry for your family but glad all seems to be going so well. Knew you could do! We need some more pics of the crew.

So glad to hear that Oakhill. Sounds like everything is going well and he has settled into your family nicely. It is so great that you were able to take him in and give him the life he deserves. I sure would like to see some photos.

Thanks so much for the update! I was going to text you this evening and ask how it was going. I wish I could see him run again! He looks like such a big goof when he takes off. I was able to play fetch with him in a run at work but could never let him off once I got him to my place. I felt terrible because I knew he loved to be outside. Jason would take him out and lay in the yard with him all the time. I'm happy to hear he has taken to the hubby :) How is he doing with Dominic? I can't wait to see some pics of him! Hopefully you can get a good action shot of him running laps :) Thanks again! I couldn't be happier with where he ended up!
