Hector and a bad back

You can get a lavage syringe from the vet or a child's oral medicine one at the drug store, also can use pedia lite mixed with low sodium broth.if he gets too dehydrated they will need to do sub-q fluids which can be painful.
I agree it would be a great comfort to him if you could lay with him.also, the meds if given orally can be harsh on the stomach so I would try to get some food in him, even if it's canned food ,something to protect his tummy. Poor thing!

Bone broth, coconut water, and also liver broth (super nutrition for a sick dog)...all are really good.

I have used an ear syringe like this one- works well for getting fluids in the mouth, and they are easy to find at a drugstore. Good luck, and I hope Hector's pain resolves with some time anda lot of TLC...

Yeah the vet gave him 2 shots. I think one was cortisone and the other was pain med. Me and my bf had to drag his ass outside and we left him laying outside. 5 minutes later while I was calling the emergency vet to get him in for a consult, he went potty and walked in the house like nothing was wrong. He seen us and he just started a crying fit again. I went to the vet and picked up some muscle relaxer and gave it to him earlier. He has a decent appetite and I'm not sure if he drank water outside or not.

I don't know if these pain killers are making him more anxious than he already is and making him nutty in the head. This boy is full of drama. He keeps fighting the drugs and won't go to sleep.

Hector is a little over 2 years old.

Man, I'm so sorry that you're going thru this with poor Hector. Give him a shot of whiskey and you take 2 shots of whiskey. JK.

Yeah I wish! The crying is soo irritating and the drugs make it worse. I'm about to pull all my hair out. Hours and hours of crying and hours and hours....all day all night...

The vet can't help with the constant pain Hector is in?

I'm so sorry, Linda. Let's hope he stops soon. I still recommend that you take a couple of shots of whiskey or your beverage of choice. :)

Do you, perchance, have a drama king on your hands?

We went on vacation... 10 days in Hawaii... on day 9, we got a call from the boarding place where Denna was... "She's in a LOT of pain... she cries when I just reach my hand out to touch her... I think it's her back... "
Since we were one day from being home, they just kept her in her room for R&R - she did go out to potty without issue, I guess... not knowing how she was doing did not make the trip home very relaxing...

When we arrived - she ran over to the truck, climbed in the backseat (F350, no easy feat) - and looked totally fine. She even jumped out of the truck - which would have jarred an achey back - once at the house. She did give us one yipe later that evening, but that was it. Apparently, we have a Drama Queen.

So.... What I'm hoping for Hector... is that he's just being a Drama King for you, and that a few days of R&R will have him back to his happy (and quiet) self.

When I make stock I freeze it in ice cube trays... since you say Hector likes ice cubes, that might be a good snack for him, too.

I hate to say it, but if its nerve pain, rather than tissue damage pain, the pain killers may not be doing much for him, though I'd hope they'd at least knock him out. But if it is nerve pain, and if the pain meds aren't touching it, then the fuzzy state they'd put him in may indeed be making him more upset. I can't rule out drama queen tendancies, but if he keeps having problems......

Do you know that all the pain is caused by the hot spot? Might something be out of alignment in his spine? A few months ago Zeek was whining and yelping when he moved in certain positions - getting in and out of the car, reaching around to scratch his back, etc. A friend recommended a Chiropractor ... a muzzle, a pocket full of really high value treats, 7 to 10 adjustments on his back and neck and in a day he was back to his happy go lucky self.

Either way, we're hoping for a speedy recovery for sweet Hector.

Well he is a drama queen, but yes he is hurt. Before the vet visit, he was yelping and screaming. On a regular basis, he doesn't scream or yelp, he cries because he's a brat. So this is very abnormal of him coupled with his awkward movements and favoring to lay down and not move. His back end started to tremble and every step he took on the stairs he let out a scream, so that's how I know that his back was messed up for real. I did notice his spine was off like there was a bump and the vet visit confirmed it.

Yeah I got some pigs feet last night and made him some broth. Will give him some today. He started drinking on his own out of a bowl.

At this point, no one really knows unless we take him in for an MRI and that was quoted 1500-1800. Now I'm not going to do that if he's going to get better just on meds and extended rest. I was going to bring him in today because he didn't get up all night, but since he made it back into the house after we took him outside I think we will wait.

Really don't know how messed up his back is at this point. Will have to wait and see how things go. There is no way we can haul him dead weighted into a car and out and in and out and in and out. It's a huge pain and I'm hoping I won't tweak my back dealing with him lol. I wish it was that easy dealing with Hector. He's a character.

Aww, poor Hector. I really hope it's nothing serious and that with extended rest he has a speedy recovery.

I read during Kryten's recovery that a lot of dogs will whine, whimper and outright cry when on certain painkillers. It apparently is a side effect of the medication. I don't know what medication it was as that wasn't one of the side effects that Kryten suffered.
Hope Hector starts to feel better soon.

Apparently it doesn't make a difference before or after pain killers, but significantly worse after. He just chirps himself to sleep and will chirp some more. First night was the worse. He panted and cried so hard it looked like he was going to die. I brought it up multiple times to the vet that he keeps on whining and crying on meds and won't go to sleep and they just say to up the dosage. *sigh*

I finally had to be mean to him and got him up. Good news is that when he's standing up on his own he seems to like to be up. He peed a very very long pee that his front end started knuckling over. He ate and is sleeping quietly, finally!

Presenting the chirping dog! Imagine hours and hours and then when you think he's done, hours more.
