  • Welcome back!

We decided to spruce things up and fix some things under the hood. If you notice any issues, feel free to contact us as we're sure there are a few things here or there that we might have missed in our upgrade.

I guess we're not rescuing

We had contacted the local Great Dane rescue a few weeks ago and hadn't heard back until yesterday. One of the ladies called and set up a home evaluation for this Saturday, and then we receive an email saying that they contacted our vet and learned that Gunny wasn't neutered (he's 11 months). They said that the vet told them they recommend neutering at 4-6 months and that since Gunny wasn't neutered, we could not adopt one of their dogs. Apparently it's a policy of theirs that all dogs in the home be spayed/neutered. Needless to say I had to calm my wife down before she called and let loose on them about not knowing what's best for Mastiffs. It's a shame that we won't be able to give one of their GD's a good home because we're not willing to put our dog at a higher risk of having problems in the future.

Unfortunately, I don't suffer fools, or stupid no tolerance policies well, so I won't be looking to rescue again.

Sorry to hear that. Rescues can suck sometimes because they can make up whatever policy they want. Some rescues and shelters though will still adopt to you if you can prove its for the health of your current dog that they are not fixed or if you show, if everything else is up to date and checks out.

hey they must like feeding the dogs better than you. things that make you go hmmmm. and then they want food and money donations because they are 'so strapped' .

My oldest pup was only 10 1/2 months when we rescued our newest and he was not neutered (still isn't). They asked why and I told them because our breeder strongly recommended we wait until at least 18 months, and they allowed us to rescue, as well as allowing us to wait to neuter this one until after 6 months (their policy is 4 months).

that sucks! what gets me about rescue centres here is they wont adopt to you if you work more than 4hrs a day, regardless if you have a dog sitter that goes in mid day. I mean come on, its not like the dogs waiting to be loved and taken home arent already stuck in a kennel all day and all night and are lucky if they see 1 walk a day! It makes me sad and angry that a lot of dogs are missing out on great, warm and loving homes with an exciting life just because their people work. rant over.

This is a huge peeve of mine, I've been denied for stupid reasons as well. My dogs live better than most kids. Some times rescues are their own worst enemy. Masteneo, your point is well taken, before I donate next time I'll make a point of asking if they will re-home to folks with a doggie door (reason I was denied). If they say no my donations will go elsewhere.

we have rescued and fostered many dogs and all shelters are not the same, sadly a majority of them make stuff up as they go along in order to make it look like they are doing the right thing when in fact they miss up perfectly good homes for the stupidest reasons (we have seen them all) so dont give up and keep looking because when you finally get to rescue your new buddy he and you will know it and in the long run the wait can be worth it!

theres a dane out there somewhere looking for you

Well it's good to know others feel the same. I can't imagine they wouldn't do the home eval and see how wonderful the dog's life would be here. My wife stays home and would have spoiled that dog rotten.

Funny thing is, I wasn't necessarily looking for a GD. I wanted a companion for Gunny and, being the great husband I am, let my wife pick what she wanted. When she said a GD, it was fine with me because I assumed its probably harder for them to find homes, since I'd imagine a lot of people don't want a dog that big.

I just saw a 7 month old male Great Dane in need of a foster on my Facebook. I don't know how their rules are but I can see if I can find it & send you the info?

Keep an eye on rescues, not all of them have the same rules, but yah. Had the same experience, repeatedly, before we ended up with Arty. Its a huge peeve, how the shelters and rescues go on about not having enough homes, but they'll turn down homes for no reason other than lack of spay/neuter, and in my case the dog we were looking at was already spayed! But Apollo isn't, so to bad. We can't even get a CAT from the local shelter cause Apollo's intact.

the other thing you will find with rescue centers is if they get a pure bread of any kind they think its gold and for some reason try to hang on to it, we were messed around by a center in florida that ran us ragged on a neo for weeks even telling us he was ours and to come pick him up then they day before we were due to head down the stopped answering us and we were just crossing the FL line the next day when i ifnally got an e mail saying they had homed him locally!

other reasons we have had is they wont adopt to people in the south and Im from London UK origonally so i have no idea what thats about!

Do not give up because just because one said no doesn't mean others will say no. Hang in there... There are 1000's of dogs who need rescued.

I think we're going to the local shelter tomorrow to see if there's a dog there that we can rescue. Those dogs have it worse than the ones that are at least in foster homes.

we found Murphy a full blood Neo on http://www.petfinder.com/ and she has been one of the best dogs we ever had! rescue center in Murphy NC logans rescue sorted it out for us after we applied and they spoke with our vet who told them their dog had just hit the rescue pup lottery!

apparently we spoil our dogs a little

the pic we got from the rescue center
