I need some more suggestions

I know that gulping food has been discussed but man nothing is helping! I've tried the water in the food but it lengthens the eating time by maybe 2mins and he's actually increased his urinating so much that he had an accident in his kennel for the first time in forever!
I've tried to handfeed but honestly with 2 preschoolers 2 ferrets and a crazy himalayan its hard to sit there twice a day for a long time lol.
I've done the rock or balls in the bowl but it doesn't slow him down at all. He finishes his 2.5 cups per meal in less than a minute!
One thing I haven't tried is those go slow bowls because I don't want to spend so much of its not going to work you know? Anyone use them and do they help?
Also he will be 24 wks and is 70lbs should I be raising the bowls for feeding and drinking?
He gets calm time in his bed after eating to help prevent bloating but I'm paranoid that I'm not doing enough especially with his gulping!
Any advice appreciated!
And for fun a shot IMG_20130626_100344.jpg

Actually no! I put canned tripe or couple tablespoons of grain free canned so it gets clumpy but I will try that for sure! This guy is a hoover I swear! I use quite a wide ss bowl and I blink and its gone it seems lol

I've tried the slow stopper bowls before but they didn't really work that great. The cupcake tin usually does the trick.

Have you thought about putting his meals in a puzzle toy? We have a die and a Kong Wobbler. If he's inside we use the Wobbler and the die if he's eating in the backyard. (The die is light weight and can go flying across the room...eak!)

Haven't thought of a toy since we do add the canned stuff I thought it'd get stuck!
What about the raising of the bowls/plates for eating? Do people still do that to prevent bloat or is the slow eating and resting after meals good enough?

Some people think raising lessens the chance of bloat, some people think it increases the chance. I've done both and don't subscribe to one theory or the other. I aim for no excessive activity before and after and no excessive amounts/gulping of water.

You can feed the canned portion from the bowl and the dry from the puzzle. (Just a thought.) My kids do use the raised bowls, but the raised bowl doesn't slow Zeek down. I have to put him in a down stay while I prepare the food. Then I let him eat when he's calm. That gets the best results for us.

Daisy used to gulp, someone suggested adding some water. That worked a bit, eventually age seemed to work. She probably started eating instead of inhaling around 18 months.

One thing I did was to feed Kryten his kibble soup in one of those doughnut shaped food bowls. This made him work for his food as it kept floating away from him. I feed from raised bowls because he stands to eat.

When we pack a kong, we add something gooey... like peanut butter. Canned food would serve the same purpose - makes 'em work for it!
It also makes for lots of loud slurping noises and pools of drool around the area where the kong is being de-stuffed of goodies...

Maybe ill try the kong and check out food puzzles too! Its hard as we rent right now and of course the living room is carpeted and its the place where he likes to take all his goodies just so he can ruin the chances of getting our dd back lol!
Thanks for all the help! This forum rocks!

Remember to feed him in a crate or an area where the kids cannot get to the dog while he is eating and put the kongs or puzzle toys or whatever u use so there is no conflict

Oh yeah I actually get the kids taking turns feeding him one of his meals each day. They make him sit or lie down and wait for the ok. He's always fed in his kennel just to contain mess.

Ain't that the truth! ... a small creature could drowned in the drool puddles. Ha Ha Ha

If you have the regular stainless steel dog bowls put them upside down and you will have one of the slow feeding bowls just put the food in the crease. That way he has to work at it.

My 1 year old inhales 3 cups in about 30 seconds. Plus he will drink a large bowl of water as soon as he is done. Is that too fast? Do these guys ever slow down eating? I wish I could get the large kong dispenser, I think the other two dogs will end up eating some of his food while he plays/eat with it.

Our 5 month old didn't know the meaning of "chew" so we hot him a slow feed bowl (was less than $10) and coupled that with interrupting his meal with some high value treats. We'll let him eat for 30 seconds then we walk past him with some roast beef or turkey, at which point he'll stop and sit in order to get the treat. Then he's back to his food. He still eats like a maniac but at least it slows him down some and works to prevent any resource guarding, since he now associates us getting near his food as a good thing.

I'd try scattering the food all over the floor, but you'd have to have the right kind of room to do it where the food wouldn't get lodged in/under things, and where you could clean up the massive slime deposit afterwards.

CorsoCorso - that is a really good technique that serves two purposes. Love it!
