Raw Food Shopping

Well, Mayzee is laying in her favorite spot under the couch (for now, I give it two more weeks), with a full tummy!

I gave her some bone-in chicken and ground chicken for breakfast, a snack of ground chicken around lunch, she just ate another piece of bone-in chicken, and I'll give her a small fish fillet snack after we eat dinner.

I used to have to convince her to eat her kibble. She would eat a bite, wander off, eat a bite.... Wasn't really that interested. With the raw meat, so sees me with it, smells it in the air, and is already sitting nicely waiting for me to give it to her. Before feeding her just now, I took and dragged the chicken about four feet in the grass, to try and engage her nose. She found the scent trail, but followed it backwards. Oh well, she tried. I did hide the meat in a grassy hole, so she couldn't see it, but when I put her next to the hole, she finally realized that's where it was after all. She wound up sitting in the hole, looking like a prairie dog, eating her meat. It was sooo cute, but I didn't have my phone with me to take a picture.

I can't wait until her body adjusts and I can start adding variety!

On a side note, does scaled tripe count as raw?

Yes, but it is not worth feeding don't waste your money. Now green tripe is a different story. IMHO, it is one of the best things you can feed. You can't buy it at grocery stores. It is against the law for them to sell it.

Just about everything I have read says green tripe is a complete food, too. :) I'll keep my eyes and ears open to finding it...

My mom totally LOVES Mayzee and is jumping on the raw-fed wagon for her. She brought up that her neighbor is gearing up for another hunt and one of her friends only eats two parts of the deer, so their freezer is full of meat they want to get rid of, and she's going to ask them both for what they don't want. :D Yay!! She's also the best bargain shopper on the planet (well, except for those coupon ladies, more power to them for doing that), so she's keeping her eyes peeled for deals for her grand-dog (or should I say grand-dogue? haha).

For the record, I have children, so my mom's already a grandma, but I think she's always wanted a DDB and all her dogs are little yap dogs. ;)

Not trying to argue, just wanting to know why. :) They had a thing of it that was nearly 4 pounds for around $3. I bought it and then got home and was like, "Uh.......Did I buy the right stuff??"

Bleach/scalded tripe has been basically stripped of most of its nutrients. If you can find a local rancher who will give it to you that would be fantastic. You can buy it on-line.

Are you in Texas?

If you watch HEB, they will mark down Beef heart, Kidney and liver. They also will mark down Pork feet and neck. Plus they will reduce Chicken. I have gotten all of this for 50 to .75 cents a pound. I do hit two different stores 2 to 3 times a week.

Wish I was close to a HEB. :(

The closest HEB to us is about 35 minutes away, but I have friends in that city, so maybe I could do a twice monthly puppy and child play date while I go shopping. (My friend has ten extremely well behaved children and four dogs, so lots of socialization opportunities!!)

Oh, and though I don't much care for WalMart, they do price match, so I could take an HEB circular in there......
