What is the temperament of a fila?

I heard they are really into guarding and don't like people that are just take a stroll through the park, and are more like " better stay there" to anyone who is across the fence. How is the life span of the fila? And how are they with other dogs, and off leash at the dog park, or just at the local trail.

Please don't take this the wrong way but a fila isn't the dog for you. They require very experienced mastiff owners and typically don't do well at dog parks or out in public at all really.

Not saying I'm getting one, just have questions about the individual mastiff, never said anything about getting a puppy, and don't see how I can't get one, I know files are reserved and bad off Leash, but I directed this too fila owners.

If all you were interested in was more info about them a quick search here would've brought you up dozens of threads. It's not just about then being off leash, most cannot leave their homes/yards robe around strangers or even extended family members.

Fila's are not public animals for the most part. They are fine with animals they consider theirs. Most others, maybe not so much. Fila's are alot of work and life style changing breed

It's pretty straight forward really. You need tall ass fences, strong ass restraints, muzzles, and keep anyone not living in the house away from the dog.

My getting a Fila was an accident. He does not like my friends. He does not like people too close to him. He does not like you. He does not like anything outside of the bounds of my house. He's pretty good about just giving a warning growl to people who get too close, and his old owner said she brought him to the dog park, but I don't know if I'm willing to trust it just because he's a year old and hasn't quite come into his temperament yet.

They were bred to hunt jaguars, protect their homes and their lands and their family. Judges in shows where the Fila is an accredited breed are advised not to touch them.

This is my first dog. This is NOT a dog for a first-time dog owner, no matter how much experience with other people's dogs one has. I know you aren't planning on getting one and are just curious. But if you know someone who is thinking about it, or that has one, BE CAREFUL. And advise them that maybe, just maybe, this isn't the dog for them. I made a mistake. But I'm doing everything I can to make up for that mistake and avoid the mistakes others have made with this breed. I refuse to give him up, because I assumed responsibility for him and won't back down or pawn him off on someone else.

At home? He may as well be a gigantic, drooling pile of mush that has entirely too much interest in making snugglies with the cats. But if something threatened one of those cats? I'm pretty sure he'd take off that person's face. At his last home, they had a one-year old daughter waddling around in a walker, and he put his whole mouth on her head while she squealed with glee as he covered her in a fine, glistening glaze of slobber. If I'd made a wrong move? I'd have lost a hand, and didn't even know what I was looking at with him at the time.

I have gotten the impression that my dog, lovable at home as he is, is NOT a friendly dog, he is NOT for other people, just the family, and he is more or less a ticking time bomb of hate and rage. I am going to be extremely careful with him.

Yeah I don't think I'm ready for a fila, I've been around rots and a retriever, that's about it. Only problem I had was dog aggression, or just them breaking down the back gate to get out. Haha. But Rottweilers are awesome i always knew filas did not like strangers but not to this extent, I know a couple people that have presa's, and they are some high strung dogs, but thankfully they all are pretty strict, and their pups are really good with them, thy still have the genetics but are overall pretty chill dogs, I think a fila is just too high strung for me ATM. Gonna get... probably a rottweiler, or another mastiff breed but wait till I do some more research for the mastiffs, I think they're a step up from the Rottweilers I knew. Especially the type I'm intrested in E.g boerboels, bullmastiffs, presa's. But yeah thanks for all the help guys.

Lotta easy going mastiffs. Fila's just aint one. If you enjoy a social life, fila's aint the best dog. ahahahaha. And you deff dont want a fence that can be knocked down. Thats not gonna end well

Yeah I learned the hard way with a huge dog breaking it and getting out. I reinforced it with a solid wooden fence made of thick wood, that even I can't tackle and take down. Was a fila your first dog and if you'd like to share, is it ok if I ask how your experience with your first fila was? We're you expecting the protective nature, I've seen presa's in action first hand, you think these guys are a step up? I think I can handle a presa.
