What is the temperament of a fila?

Our first dog was a rottie mix (+GSD, +Pyrn, +???), and our EM is pretty close in temperament... maybe even a little more social (at the moment). We're smarter dog owners this time around (I certainly hope!), which probably has a lot to do with it, but after our last dog, that had some lab in there... it's nice to get back to the guardian breeds that think for themselves a little more. :)

Yeah I learned the hard way with a huge dog breaking it and getting out. I reinforced it with a solid wooden fence made of thick wood, that even I can't tackle and take down. Was a fila your first dog and if you'd like to share, is it ok if I ask how your experience with your first fila was? We're you expecting the protective nature, I've seen presa's in action first hand, you think these guys are a step up? I think I can handle a presa.

My Fila, by no means, was my first dog. I did a ton of research before I brought Cane home. Went to visit the kennel where I got him before we brought him home. I was given all the warnings that you see in this post and every other post about the temperament of the Fila. A guard dog is what I wanted and a nasty one at that.

I knew what I was bringing home.....NOT! Until you own one, you really can't fathom how protective they can be and how much they hate strangers. As much as they hate strangers, they love their people even more.

No I have had giants going back to being first born. Kona is my first fila. Like AB, you only think you get it. Reading dont get you ready for what they are. We tend to confuse a guard dog for a protection dog. And not a comand trained protection either. But one who works off of a primal drive. Like a herder knows how to herd they know how to protect. At least they should think they do. ahahaha. The first time your dog snaps and nothing you say seems to even be registering with the dog, just full on "I'm gonna bite the shit out of this stranger fo no reason" it might dawn on you what your working with.

good luck with your research there are definitely a lot of people here with info but I would recommend doing some google searching as well.

just an FYI you asked about dog parks with a fila...no. To add to that I personally don't think filas are good for cities and even the suburbs can be pushing it if you don;t have the right info and are not fully prepared.

I wondered when this one would pop up. Primehns I have had plenty of experience with hard or aggressive dogs and I would not own a Fila if you paid me. I love the look and idea but I don't need a dog that is as focused in protecting and guarding as a Fila. I love my social guardian and am considering getting another.

Wow these dogs must take some work!
ShartFamily is right these dogs are for experienced owners, and sure you could search for the answer, but some people just love being snarky. Nothing wrong with starting a new thread in a section that's very slow traffic.

Very Slow traffic how so? Just with the sheer amount of posts this section is only second to the English mastiff.

Sure in comparison to the other breed topics it does well. But Fila's are definately worth discussing more.

I wish there was more. I look forward to opening a fila thread. Even if it's just to read Juan calling me an idiot or for me to call him one. ahahahaha

Chuck you are an independent thinker, but to those kool aid drinkers spewing their BS you are an idiot. Take it as a badge of honor.

Well I would say there are far better folks in the breed to look at as a hero. Ace, mountain, ab, many many fila owners. Hell I only know what little I know from these folks. Even Juan as much as I bust his balls
