How Did You Choose That Name?

Im always curious as to how people come to pick puppy names.

So I'll start:

Jovo - he was named Scorpio so we wanted to change his name and the only thing my daughter and I could agree on was he had to be named after a Vancouver Canuck. I wanted Trevor Linden, she wanted Bertuzzi, but we couldn't shorten that to a workable name. Then it hit us...Jovonovski's nickname is Jovo so that's what we called him. We both loved Jovonovski so it worked.

Tess - nothing special here, that was her name when I got her and it just suited her, not as much as Tessie Bear does tho ha ha.

Thor-Was already named when I got him at 8 months, I wanted to change it but everyone told me "leave it" lol.

Mosso- I have an unsual and very uncommon name so I wanted my pets to have that "signature" as well. I am not sure if I am going to officially name my next pup that but its one that I had a lot of thought about. It means lively movement particullary in music, as of which I have a extreme liking to ochestras.

Tess was just a name we liked. With Azlin, I originally loved the name Aslynn but the Irish pronunciation if that is Ashlynn which I didn't want so I started thinking about similar names and thought of Aslan from the chronicles of narnia and feminized it to Azlin.

Im naming my pup Mufasa after the Lion King, reason being is that quote thats been floating around forever, "What the Lion is to the Cat, the Mastiff is to the Dog". It just seemed fitting.

Grady is named from the much loved sitcom "Sanford and Son"... Grady was a character in the show. I just pictured a Mastiff pup lumbering into a room with the theme song playing and it was funny to me. Luckily... Grady perfectly fits his name! He's quite a character and makes us laugh all the time. ;)

Gimli is named from "Lord of the Rings" because Gimli in the book is small in stature but mighty and def thinks he's big and bad. Gimli, our Boston, also fits this perfectly! Especially when laying down the law with Grady the EM pup!!!

I like old people names for dogs, so we have Mable, and my big guy I named 'lil Abner, for obvious reasons. His personality reminds me of the cartoon character. My newest pup though, I named when he was only a week old. He was the biggest of the litter and the one with the most personality, I named him Atlas, because whenever I looked at him, all I could think of was the book Atlas Shrugged. I have had dogs named Winston, Chubz, Millard, Elwood, Beatrice, even named one pup Wretched, because he was the sweetest thing, but he had a face that made him look like a MEAN dog.

My first DDB, I named Bentley because I was young, still in college, and had never spent that much money on a dog...so I named him after the expensive car

My mom picked out Fahren's name (pronounced Fair-in)...I think she got of a soap opera

Heathen -well his real name is after his grandfather, but I mainly call him Heathen because he acted like one for the first 3 1/2 years of his life.

And Tempyst - got her name because in the photos her breeder sent me she looked like a little firecracker ...but I couldn't come up with anything pretty that I liked so I named her Tempesta di fuoco which means firestorm in Italian.

My husband named Joe Boxer, my breeders 6 year old daughter named Aurora, was an "A" litter so all pups started with A, and My other breeder named Cribs Charybdis was her "C" litter. The names are all fitting, Raw is my princess, and Charybdis was the daughter of Poseidon and a Sea nymph in the Odyessy. She formed a whirlpool, so when sailing they had the choice of getting closer to Charydis and all dying or Scylla the 6 headed monster and only losing 6 sailers. It is where the term between a rock and a hard place derived from. :p In other words it just means trouble and is very fitting.

Knox: my husband is in the military, and we played around with bases on which he had previously been stationed. He was stationed at Fort Knox when we first met, and we both liked the sound of it.

Roux: because she's apricot in color, we were thinking about "Red." But then I remembered "Roux" as meaning "redhead" in French, and we both liked it so it stuck.

Topps Sita Magnolia aka Magee (pron. Maggie): we had a friend staying here whose dog, Sita, got out of their camper & ran up onto the highway. She had to be scraped off the road. She's one of the first to be buried in the pet cemetery here. We promised her owner the next dog would be named after Sita.
Topps Sumo's Ray of Sunshine aka Sunny was named after his grandfather, Ch. Topps Sumo. Beloved & forever missed. He was a massive bullmastiff, with a heart as big. Sadly it stopped working at 5 yrs of age. Sunny's personality is just like his grandpa's even if he isn't quite as big.
Topps Bella Rosa aka Bella, she's a redhead (red fawn) & her owner is Italian.
Gems Ruby Begonia on Topp aka Ruby: her owner & I both have the nickname Ruby, & the friend/co owner/breeder who gave us Ruby asked that we please keep Gem Kennels & a gemstone in her AKC name.

Todd & I wanted something different, but masculine & strong... I poured over boy baby name websites... in particular Irish warrior names. Todd hated every one I picked. He suggested either Cameron or Raistlin - brothers in the Dragonlance book series. Cameron was the big ox of a man with a heart of gold and Raistlin the powerful wizard. I prefer Cameron as it fits his personality best but hubby won and my boy is Raistlin...

Apollo and Athena - greek god thing for our rotties
We were going between Cyrus and anther name for the 3rd rottie but when the boyfriends helmet fell off the hook in the middle of the night and rolled onto him with the name of Cirus on the helmet he said it was a sign.

U2 de Italica Terrae was for a litter that was band themes. With her nick name as Hemi to try and keep Scott from claiming her since he takes all my puppies as his own.

Danae was a "D" litter and a princess believing the world revolved around her.

The puppies are named in line with their father, Oak :) So we have Rowan and Sequoia and the puppies in the litter are registered tree names.

Ziva -- From NCIS. Our fila rescue has more than lived up to her name. Silent assassin but so sweet and beautiful with the ones she loves.

Start with the easy one :) Ren is a Toaist term which refers to the feeling on has when doing the right thing (to sum it up easily). The thought of giving Stonewall a sibling gave us the feeling of doing the right thing for him so it just fit.

Stonewall is a little more complicated. Based on his coloring and potential size he looks like a Stone Wall, and being a smidge stubborn he does tend to stonewall when he doesn't agree with what I want him to do - LOL. The other half is indeed after Stonewall Jackson. Yup, I'm Canadian, but had ancestors on both sides of the US Civil War. One of which was in the Stonewall Brigade and at Appotomox (sp?) courthouse at the surrender so having done a fair bit of research on the brigade I discovered that Mr. Jackson was actually not only a brilliant military mind but a truly kind man who always attempted to do what he thought was the right thing. If you do a bit of reading beyond the cause of the war he was actually a fairly remarkable man. So roll the 3 together and Little Man got named Stonewall. I still cringe a bit when I tell people what his name is becuase I truly don't want to offend anyone, but I can't count the number of people that when I tell them what his name they laugh and say it just fits him.

So there we have it Stonewall and Princess Ren Ren (Ren rapidly got morphed to Princess Ren Ren when we realized that she truly believes she IS a princess)

Blue because she is a blue merle catahoula, and Topaz because we wanted something that went along with Blue and she has a gem shape on her chest.

Zillie- My boyfriend named her Zilla when we first rescued her because she was so big and would knock over and step on things.. I never liked the name and didn't think it suited her so I changed it to Zillie which is more feminine. She also goes by Zoozoo, Zupy, Zippy, Ziddle, Zupe-a-dupe, SillyZillie, Goopy, Dippy, Drool-factory and the list goes on..

Chumah- Named him after a mastiff we have in the rescue named Chuma. Not very creative on my part. I put an "h" at the end so it would no longer be a girls name. He is in foster until I move (next month hopefully) and his foster family calls him Chewy Because the husband is from Brazil and says Chumah is a girls name and couldn't bare calling a male dog a girl's name.

I Like naming my pets kinda nerdy names though, There is/was Malvin, Morgan, Dalton, Moe. One of the Hens is named CooCooRoosie after the band CoCoRosie.
Turtles: Ms. Turtle, Salvidor, Dollie.
Tick(stray cat)- Because when I found him he was covered in ticks. It still fits him because he is like a parasite that you can't get rid of.
I've had so many different pets that I could go on all day.
