Caucasian Ovcharka is #1 when it come to warding off intruders. If you don't know about this breed please google it.

As far as the Caucasian Ovcharka, I don't know if a big dog with all that hair would fair so well in Arizona. I could be wrong.

These are not even the whole pack go here and check out some of the photos. https://www.facebook.com/CoomoreBoerboels?ref=br_tf
I think they do some foraging as well as normal feeding.

ZEB075, how well does a CAO do in hot environments with that heavy coat? It might help with the cactus or might make it worse with the brush burrs and other tangles.

You guys are correct and didn't even think about weather. So the CO wouldn't be the best choice for southern Arizona.

So I would go with a well trained Presa Canario or Boerboel.

Me personally I would be worried about the liability. Illegal or not your dog mauls them your liable. Just like any criminal. You have to prove intent and just being on the property doesn't usually cut it.

sounds like she needs a big dog with a big bark to get people from climbing over and getting into her property..but yet one that would be friendly as well ...I am not one to pick what would be good for the job..but I do get the part if that dog kills someone you could go to jail and that would scare me...so I think I would go with a couple of EM..but you got to understand which ever dog you get its going to need training and lots of training to do what you need it to do...I have 4 dogs and that make a lot of noise when someone comes over but they stop once the person is in the house...I have a 80lbs golden mix and a poodle 8lbs and a Min Aussie 40 lbs and Leo my Neo 7 months weighing in at 95lb...so really thats all you need most people will run the other way when a dog is barking at them...

EM would be a bad choice in the Arizona desert as would a BM and a French would also be a bad idea. None of those are well suited to the heat they would be exposed to.

Most of the illegals coming across are ok, for the most part they will steer clear of occupied home, its the drug runners coyotes (not the dogs the human traffickers) I worry about. The law states The owner of a dog is not liable to the person injured, if the injured person had knowledge of the propensities of the dog and wantonly excited it or voluntarily and unnecessarily put himself in the way of the dog. Like I said I dont want a dog that will eat(attack) trespassers, rather one that is big enough to scare an intruder, but who could defend my children if needed. Say my kids were in the house and I was in the back in my art studio and a scary person tried to break down the door, I want my dog to protect my kids. Or if they are riding on the property and an illegal stumbles on to the property they will leave very quickly by seeing the dog(or two)We also have packs of coyotes, the real ones, and the occasional mountain lion or bear. This is why I was apprehensive about the Fila, because it seems like they an ask questions later type. When I had my English mastiff he only once felt the need to protect me and her stood in between my and the "bad guy" and when this guy tried to get closer to me he barked at him. We found out later the guy was a pedophile/rapist.

If it was me with the wildlife and kids involved I would get about 3 Boerboels from different breeders or parents, or the same amount of Kangals and create a good stable pack, one dog would be prey for a lion or pack of coyotes 2 could have trouble with either, 3 coyotes and lion and bears would stay clear of mostly. Heck even my one little Boerboel attacked a bear a few weeks back. There is a breeder up north that does Kangals and Boerboels and both breeds are great with kids and family. Kangal or Boz dogs are very large and known as flock guardians and are well suited for large properties and nomadic living. But something came across my mind, how are you going to deal with the rattlers and the dogs? Will you do aversion training? This can be an issue with any of these types of dogs as they will want to attack the snake and protect you and the kids.

For the snakes we plan on getting a few peacocks to control and do aversion . Even living in the city rattlers are a problem. Our nEighbors English Mastiff just got bit in the face last week. I'm hoping to get a vial or two of anti venom to keep on hand jut in case.

I suggest you send Brad a message. He lived in the desert in New Mexico and had pretty much all of the breeds named above lol. He would probably be the best help in realistically talking about your needs and the best breed/s to suit them. With all breeds mentioned above you will really need to do your homework to find the breeder best suited to your needs. Here is a link to brad's page, I would send him a pm :) http://www.mastiff-forum.com/member.php/907-BradA1878

I had no idea about peacocks either. I know they can be jerks, but I did not know they could harness that hate for good.

When I was living in Florida, alot of people had a Donkey or two to ward of the coyotes.

Yeah its crazy, but from what I have been told peacocks are what is used in India to keep the cobra snakes at bay. I think they are pretty so its a win win for us!

My middle school teacher had Peacocks on his desert ranch. He never had a snake problem but he did have rodent issues. He didn't like cats either.
