Anyway it's not my business, i just hate how people talk about pitbull's, and have never owned one. I'm done with this thread anyway, oh by the way, mastiff's, its , rotts, are actually used for protecting drug dealers, not just the 50lb pits. I would find it unfortunate if you got a mastiff breed, and "heard" something from a friend, and label him/her dangerous. Couple dozen pitbull attacks, with millions in america, kinda tells you something about temperament, they have a very stable temperament.

Smart family, i'm done. That post just set me off.

I have owned three mastiff and love the breed. I understand mastiffs recieve the same bad rap as other dogs. I just love me some drooly wrinkly face lol! I wonder is an English mastiff would be enough of a deterrent? I know they are pretty accepting of most people, but has anyone had an experience when a mastiff was put in the position to need to protect or defend its owner and didn't ?

Generally speaking if you want a deterrent get any dog that looks cool with a bad ass bark... but if you have real illegal problems, than you need something more than a deterrent... but if you need more than a deterrent your going to need a dog with higher drive.... you see the problem? IF you want a dog to properly protect, than your going to have to get a dog that was bred for that....but those dogs aren't for the weak hear-ted....Kronos is not a joke and has become upset with me that i corrected him and we have to have a come to jesus about it or i know i could be in a bad way....its control...i think you should do more research on temperament, training, and history.... before you get a dog that can back up his bark.... in saying that the English Mastiff would be perfect for you but 9/10 will watch u get robbed and drool on the robber...

It is a real illegal problem in the area. I do not want a bad ass dog for show, I want a dog that will protect my family. But I want a smart dog, one who knows when to go after bad guys and when to leave alone the lady from church bringing cookies. YKWIM?

My last mastiff would be gentle and sweet but he almost tore the arm of a potential rapist. SO he knew when to act and when not to.

REad these write ups to get a better idea of the issue.

Yes I understand, which is one reason why I am asking lots of questions. I know I can handle an EM no problem, personally I think they are a very easy dog to train and work with. I need to know what I am getting into and if it is appropriate. I'm wondering if and EM with a bit less than my all out socialization may be enough for us. Im trying to research. Obiously my family is far more important than any visitors. I would suppose a good chain link kennel would be enough to separate the dogs from visitors?
